Wraith stood outside the headmistress’s office and absently tried to get his hair to lie flat, forgetting that nobody would see it anyway. He’d followed Katana’s directions and had managed to find the right door on the first try and knocked, taking a step back and waiting quietly. Wraith didn’t fool himself into thinking his ghost act would fool Emma Frost. He knew better. She was Emma freaking Frost, after all. The woman was possibly the most famous telepath in the world and a little thing like not being visible wouldn’t even register with the X-man that had so easily talked his parents into sending him away.
He didn’t deny that the idea of the institute was amazing, but he liked his old school. He liked his old friends. His parents, his siblings, had been open to his being a mutant. He hadn't wanted to uproot his entire life and drive 12 hours down from Maine. He hadn't wanted to... well it didn't matter what he wanted. This was what he needed. He needed to find himself again. He needed to learn how to be Matthew again.
Just think happy thoughts, Wraith thought to himself. Thankful, happy thoughts. She did you a favor. You’re going to learn how to control this thing and then you’ll be yourself again. You won’t have to be a… a specter anymore. Smile, you pussy, and don’t think.
Taking a deep breath, Wraith knocked on the door and prayed to God that if Ms. Frost was going to 'listen in', she wouldn’t take his reticence personally.

The softest of footsteps and her ever present stiletto heels did stab at the hardwood floor with each one of them making her signature tic-tic-a-tic sound across the floor from behind the door. Ever so evenly she turned the handle, no hesitation present and with an easy pull opened the door. "Well don't you look a sight" she smiled at him with her eyes. Not so much with her lips but the sparkle in her eyes told him he was most welcome there.
"Do come in and take a seat. I'm sure you have some questions for me, but first let me ask.. how was the trip down?" She shut the door after him as he entered and followed right behind him to return to her desk. Sitting and extending an arm for him to do so as well, in the seat he was nearest to. "Please make yourself comfortable" she said with a nod as he sat "would you like something to drink? Tea? Juice? Water perhaps?"
"No? Well, Matthew today is a fantastic day for you. Your first day in your new school, your home away from home. I wonder if in a month from now you will think I was lying to you today, but trust me that this Institution is here to help you. To enable you to have a normal life.. but let me put that into perspective for you." she leaned back in her plush overstuffed leather chair and with fingertips touching placed her elbows on the arm rests. "A 'normal life' for a mutant is nothing like what you have known, or seen in sitcoms, or even in those silly docudramas they like to show of us and our lives. Although I will admit that I did very much enjoy the Dazzler True Hollywood Story." A genuine smile crossed her lips at the memory.
"But as for you and your circumstance... Have you any recollection as to what initiated this upsurge in your mutant gift? Can you remember what you were doing or thinking at the moment it happened and so uncontrollably stuck?" She eyed him knowingly, her eyes meeting his and yet his were so very immaterial to the naked eye. "Telling me wont make you visible, so you have nothing to fear in that regard." She knew more about the boy than he knew about himself and she was not going to let him in on the secret.. not just yet at any rate. Some things were best left to be discovered by oneself in one's own time and at one's own pace.

Wraith took the proffered seat and struggled not to think about anything other than how hot Emma Frost was. He definitely wasn't thinking about her boobs. Women who looked like her shouldn’t be allowed to be teachers. It was criminal. He had no idea how the other students kept it off their minds when she was around, but Wraith was personally doing his damnedest to think about skinning and portioning the eight-point whitetail he’d brought down last week. Perfect, he thought. Think about a bloody animal carcass instead of… He looked up at the ceiling and blushed furiously.
“Ride was fine. Leo started singing to the radio somewhere in Vermont... but I pulled through.” He rubbed the back of his neck unsure what Frost wanted him to say. “I don’t know. I don’t know what happened, or what I was thinking about, exactly. I didn’t even realize I’d… disappeared until I went back into the house. It’s been months, ya know? I’d been out walking… I like the snow, Ms. Frost. I like the cold. It helps me think and it… it’s quiet.” Wraith stared at his shoes. It was disconcerting to see someone looking right at him, now. He wasn’t used to having eyes directly on him. “I don’t know what I was thinking about. It was just so peaceful, so calm… When I went back in I was like this. I don’t want to disappear, Ms. Frost. Not permanently.”
Wraith looked up and tried a smile. “S’not all bad. I can get into the places no one else can. I see things. I hear things. It’s useful…” his smile faltered a bit. “But I don’t want to be invisible forever.”

"No," she said in a soothing tone "that wouldn't do at all. Just think how blissful it will be to have control over it. To be able to become invisible when you want and turn it off at your whim, that is the goal... for now." She reached over and took up her tea cup, daintily, taking time to pull a slight sip from it as she considered the boy's circumstance.
"I'm sure we might be able to expand our horizons as we master this particular power, yes?" She arched an eyebrow at him as she took another sip. Reaching back to place the cup in it's saucer she sat up pulling herself closer to the desk. "It would seem as though this phenomenon of yours extends out just enough to contain what is in direct contact with your skin, namely your clothes. I think there is some potential to work on extending the event horizon, but we'll let Beast take a look at the prospects after you have first mastered 'on' and 'off'... fair enough?"
"Now, as for lodgings, I think it best to give you your own room for now. The urge to be social might help you shed this veil of yours, the distance between you and others could be a catalyst in drawing you out. Plus if you have no one to spy on or impress then all the better I think for your return to the visual." She looked at him again, meeting his eyes with her own and matching his gaze. What she was in fact doing was psychically looking out through his eyes into her own. It gave the approximation to the boy of her looking into his eyes, which in a round about sort of way she was.
"As for your team, the Acolytes, you will find them to be quite accepting I think, for the most part at least. Now, there is a little problem about getting around here. Since no one will be able to see you and tell by the look on your face that you're lost, I will give you a bit of a hand in learning your surroundings... but you will have to trust me. I need you to open your mind to me so I can impart the layout of the school and the grounds to you. Are you ready?"

Wraith barely listened after Emma told him he'd have his own room. He'd never had his own room before. At home he'd bunked with two of his older brothers, and the thought of having all that space to himself was utterly divine. No one else's crap, no one else's snores, and, thank God, no one else's farts. For the first time in memory, Wraith would be able to sleep without fear of being gassed.
He looked up at the headmistress, not doubting for one moment that she could 'see' the hope in his eyes. Getting this power under control, being able to turn it on and off at will, that was what had finally convinced him to leave home and come to prestigeous school.
Wraith had wondered himself how he was going to find his way around. He had very possibly burned his bridges with pretty Donna and cranky Katana, and sneaking up on super-powered people to ask directions just seemed like a terrible idea. He'd wind up electrocuted or pounded through a wall. If Frost had a way around that...
"I'm ready," he said resolutely. "And thank you."

"Very well.. just relax, this wont hurt a bit." She dove into his mind not only placing a walk through of the school and it's grounds into his memory but also picking through some select memories. She had to, in order to get a better idea of what had caused his power to remain activated. It may have taken months to find out what it was that spurred it's intense activation otherwise.
"Hmm, there it is." She said softly as she finished both tasks in his mind. "Now at least you wont get lost so easily. Can you recall where the library is? How about the Medical Lab?" She watched from the 'sidelines' of his mind as he looked through his memories for the answers to her little pop quiz. How wonderful it was to note the delight at his discovery of brand new information. She had intentionally left it in a vague free flowing 'deja-vu' sort of context that would allow him to determine a best route from any given starting point to his intended destination. A brilliantly subtle stroke if she did say so herself.
He had no idea though, that she had done some looking and was watching still, but his memories did yield some interesting clues as to what had occurred that fateful day. She now knew for sure exactly what his dilemma was and the slightest of smiles softened her features. It would be some time before he came to it himself but just as with Onyx, Emma would leave him to figure it out for himself. Although she would let Colossus know what she had determined, as well she would insist that he allow the boy to come to his own resolution, a nudge or two in the right direction from a caring Team Leader wouldn't hurt.

Holy crap! Wraith rolled through his new 'memories' of the school. Why couldn't I get a useful power like that? He would be able to find his way around, now, and he didn't mind the extra help. "Thanks, Ms. Frost." He squirmed a little under her steady gaze but smiled up at the headmistress regardless.
"Is it cool if I go look around a bit? Explore?" All of a sudden, Wraith was eager to go and investigate his new surroundings and new classmates. He didn't have plans on actually saying anything to anyone, but he doubted he'd cause much trouble if he just observed a bit. Donna and Katana had been going to play basketball, and there had been some chick on rollerskates that he'd driven past on his way up the drive. It was Sunday morning there had to be others hanging around. And maybe he'd learn a overhear something useful while he was exploring...
That was one of the good things about his power. Wraith, when he remembered to pay attention, was excellent at gathering information. People were always candid when they thought they were alone. Strange how being invisible helped him 'see' people for what they really were.
He threw a cheeky wave over his shoulder, aware that Frost wouldn't miss it, and he bolted to the door. He stood a moment in the hall, indecision wracking him for a moment. He had no idea where he wanted to go. He wanted to get to know his new classmates, but... his stomach rumbled loudly. That settled that. Thanks to the map that had been implanted in his head, he knew exactly where to go. Grinning, Wraith headed toward the kitchen.

At the end of the hallway, Sean stopped and almost dropped the papers in hand, looking a bit confused on how a door opened on it's own and then closed, and he could have sworn he heard footsteps too, which only startled him all the more. "What the heck?" he said with a confused look on his face and looking around. Leave it to a school like this to be haunted on top of it. It probably wasn't so surprising being that this school had gone through so many things, and he was fairly sure people died here too. Now this place is haunted. I oughta warn Katie girl so she don't get startled finidin' out on her own, he thought and walked cautiously to Emma Frost's office.
Sean knocked on the door that opened when he hit it slightly. "Ms. Frost ma'am? Would it be alright if I came in?" He waited patiently for her to answer before he pushed the door open and walked in. Out of respect for a lady, he took the hat off his head at her presence and smiled shyly. "I'm real sorry to bother you on a Sunday morning ma'am, but I just finished settin' up the barn this mornin' and I was hoping to talk to you about some things to make life easier for the horses when they arrive, and for us," Sean said with a slight grin, unable to keep a smile off his face around the pretty Headmistress.
"I don't know how much ya know about keepin' horses, but I wasn't told anything 'bout how things are runnin' so I thought I might talk to you about them and perhaps figure some things out." He took a deep breath and ran down the list of things that he wanted to mention through his head before he began. "Well first off ma'am, with horses it'd probably be best that we get a barn cat. They get along real well with horses, and we're gonna need 'em to keep them mice and other critters away from the feed. It's always a big problem whenever there are horses around, and it might be wise to get at least one barn cat to save us some money on feed and vet bills as mice um, well droppings could be toxic if a horse accidentally consumes it." He knew that there was a policy against pets in the school, but he hoped since it would be exclusively for the barn, it would be alright.
"Also ma'am, being that we live in the woods that's full of critters that may try and be a threat to the horses, it might be in our best interests to get a herding dog too. They are good for keeping horses from wandering off and warning of predators. They can help keep the barn safe against the things a cat wouldn't be able to do as well," Sean said with a slight uneasy grin. He didn't want to offend Emma Frost in case she had already thought of all this, but he felt that it should be said.
"I realize it's asking a lot ma'am, but I am only thinking of how it would be best to keep the horses safe, and us as well. I um, well I took the liberty of lookin' up a rescue farm not far away from here." He took the papers in his hand and placed it on the table to show Emma Frost. "They rescue animals and train them, and are just lookin' for a good home for them, they don't even charge for anything to adopt them. If you'd allow, I'll look after both of them as I plan to be with the horses a lot anyways." His eyes shined as he got excited for their upcoming arrival. "I really am grateful that we're gettin' them, and I want things to be as comfortable for them as I can. I'm willin' to go and help pick out the animals if you'd allow it, I would never wanna inconvenience anyone with it." Sean had his say and now could only hold his breath as he waited for a response.

"Ahh, yes.. Sean, right on time." She had said to herself under her breath when he arrived. Intently listening to the young man, one of the few students she had trust enough in to let him handle such a large undertaking.. but not without plenty of help at the first sign of distress, Hmmm, maybe not the first sign of distress. It's always a good indicator of things to come as to just when exactly a student 'pushes the panic button', so if he has trouble I'll make sure to let him flounder a moment before I alert anyone to his plight.
"Well, Sean.. thank you so very much for your concern and your help will be most appreciated in this. I have however enjoyed the company of horses, at times far more so than that of some people I have known, so yes I am well aware of what is needed." She considered how best to explain and then simply went with no explanation at all. The boy was clever and had been to another dimension already himself, he would accept what she told him as fact, for indeed it was.
"Not that I don't think we should have more animals about the place..." She lifted her tea cup off of it's saucer, pinky finger extended "..well, it actually is that I don't want muddy paw prints running through the mansion, and the children sometimes forget a herding dog's place is to guard and herd." She took a soft lipped sip of her beverage and placed the cup down. "But be that as it may, it has been told to me that no animal, or creature, being of ill intent, will enter a stable that has housed a winged stallion of the Valkyrie. I trust the one who told me that to be truthful, yet it has been some time and perhaps the magics and protections have worn off."
She considered the difficulty in training yet another to do it's appointed task in life. As if students with mutant powers weren't enough, now a dog too.. perhaps the wolf-twins would not mind relocating to the loft of the stables? She smiled slightly at her sarcastic thought "And you have a wonderful grasp of what is needed as far as keeping things safe for the horses and preventing them from straying. I know it will put a serious crimp in your time, but I had hoped you would come to me asking to help out as much as you could. A little slice of home is a welcome thing in such a strange and foreign world is it not?" She let a small chuckle escape her.
"I like very much what you have suggested, and I think you and Colossus should go and pick us out a few good animals. Let's cross our fingers that you find a dog who is trained AND able to deal with living among children with incredible gifts. Trust Peter to aid you, he knows his way around a farm as well, so you two should have more than enough in common." She couldn't help but pick up on his thoughts as they leapfrogged through excited images and hopeful anticipation to land on the face of his little friend. "Yes, you may take Katie with you but please be mindful of her circumstance and we shall hope she doesn't get scratched, yes?" Emma could only caution him, but she had a feeling the girl's time was drawing close and she would again want to explore the potential of her abilities.
"Now, Sean. With all of this added responsibility I want you to make a greater effort to focus not just on your studies but on your power as well. Dr.McCoy told me of the exoarmor you and Kate put together for your project..?.. I think a visit from our friend in Iron might be arranged to see where all that design might lead you, but ONLY if you bring your grades up! A 3.3 GPA will not do and misunderstanding assignments is only going to make matters worse.. in future any questions about any assignments should be asked of the teacher assigning them. Understood?" She smiled at him warmly.

Sean beamed with pride at the words from Ms. Emma Frost, not just about accepting his idea but also for her compliments on his power. He loved fixing things since he was a little boy, and never in his wildest dreams did he think that it was actually something he was destined to do. And to have someone like Iron Man look at his work would be a downright honor. "Thank you very much for your kind words ma'am, and I promise you that I will do my very best in school and my powers," he said with a big smile, trying to contain his excitement and retain proper manners around a high class lady.
"I can assure you ma'am, the cat or dog won't be setting foot inside the mansion, and I'll personally make sure the dog gets a bath every couple of weeks to keep him lookin' presentable. I looked on that website ma'am, and they got dogs that are real good with kids and animals, and outdoor dogs too. I'll make sure that we get us a real good pair ma'am, and I really do thank you for trusting me with this, you won't be disappointed." Sean beamed at her graciously, a breath of relief leaving him that she actually listened to his thoughts and ideas and that she had enough faith in him to let him take on that responsibility. He really liked Emma Frost, he knew that she was tough, but she was really kind too. If it hadn't been for her and Mr. Summers, his identity may have been discovered back home and he would have been shunned. As much as he missed home, he couldn't thank them enough for making this place a home for him.
"Also ma'am, I was thinking if you don't think it would be too much trouble... could I maybe bring Jenny along as well? I know I'd have to talk to Karma, but she knows horses and animals as well as any adult I know, and she's really been missing her home lately, I think it might make her happy," Sean asked shyly but with a determined look on his face. He didn't want to push his luck, but the thought of how Jenny's sweet little face would light up at the chance of helping to pick out an animal gave him the courage to at least try. "We'd be real careful with her, I just thought it might be something nice to cheer her up a little. I think she'd love a chance to help," he added as an afterthought.
He really did have a soft spot for Jenny, she reminded him so much of his favorite baby cousin back home. That little lisp she spoke with was enough to melt anyone's heart, but Sean found it especially heart warming when she spoke of home and her little animal friends. He knew she missed them just as much as he missed the horses on his farm back home. This might be a chance to ease that homesickness for both of them and also be a really nice memory to look back on. Sean knew that he would feel good about himself to know that bringing her along brought her joy.

Emma smiled at the young man. He was quite the gentleman and for that she was very thankful. The last thing she needed was another excuse for Kitty to resent her over the placement of students on her team. The latest conscript to the New Mutants was already showing his true colors and Emma was sure she would hear it from Shadowkat on that point at their next 'encounter', but with luck Riff~Raff would handle things. Emma was quite confident that Kitty had become reliant on the wolf-lad to keep her team in line. That's what being soft like Xavier will get you she said thinking of Katherine Pryde's face and storing up the thought to use on her at the next convenient chance.
Sean, however was far from the unscrupulous -Ram-, and as such she trusted his word. She knew if it was within his ability to do so he would at all costs keep the word he had given her. "I trust you will stand by what you have told me Sean, let's have a look at those papers shall we..." Emma picked up the printouts he had taken such care in placing, just ever so, on her desk. It was adorable how tentative he was around her, and although she would have liked to be less removed from the students, she had difficulty in letting herself. After all of the children she had lost to the ravages of the world in her days teaching who could really blame her. It was honestly sometimes more than she cared to address even in her quietest alone times, the haunting memories kept her up late at night searching from the CEREBRA Chamber for others to help... before it was too late for them as well.
"Well it is somewhat close, and I think it's a wonderful idea to include Jenny, she will most certainly enjoy the experience" she didn't want to burst his bubble, he was ever so excited, so she kept it upbeat in tone. "However, it is a thirty-five minute drive and today is Sunday. It says here they stop allowing visitors at 1pm." She glanced over top of the papers at him. "That means you'll need to round up the troops quick as you can. Let's see if I can help in that endeavor."
She closed her eyes and focused her mind. Concentrating on the people at the school and their whereabouts. "Ahh lets see... Piotr is finishing up a workout in the gym. Katie is in the cafeteria. Karma and the rest of the Alphas, save Torri, are having a late breakfast out by the hedge maze. Hmm three in the MedLab.. strange, I would have expected more by this hour in the day.. and the only other person I would think could be of help might be Rhetoric, who can speak to animals. Too bad she is wrapped up in an impromptu training session with Coffee and Ram out by the lake, her power might have proved invaluable in this instance."
Noting that Perigee was waiting out in the hallway, pacing back and forth no doubt with something weighing heavily on her mind. The details of which the Headmistress would hear soon enough, so she didn't bother to pry into the girl's mind. As it were Emma knew they didn't have much longer before the girl would build her confidence and knock. "So there you have it. As for trusting you to handle all this responsibility, I do.. but I want you to ask for help when you need it- because, have no illusions TuneUp, you will."
She stood and smiled easily at him. Handing him the papers she nodded. He was one well grounded youngster and she knew his intentions were pure, but she also knew how this world could change a soul. She hoped it never happened to him. He would need to get a feel for responsibility though, and she was happy he was asking for it. It certainly made her and Scott's jobs that much easier, since preparing these young people for the world they would inherit was what they had taken to their hearts as their calling. She would make sure to keep him focused on his powers, it was paramount that he gain a fuller understanding of them if he was to survive and thrive. She wanted to say something, leave him with some tenderness, but there was none she could muster, so when he took the papers she simply sat down and said "Thank you Sean. I look forward to seeing what you bring home."

Sean tried his best to keep his smile humble and his excitement at a calm level, but it was near impossible. "Thank ya very much ma'am, I promise we'll all do our very best! I'll go find them right now, and we'll get a move on it!" he said taking the papers and smiling widely at the Headmistress. He was honored that she would trust him enough to do this. He had thought she may have been mad at him still for the whole thing in English class, but it didn't seem so. If she was mad, she was hiding it really, really well.
"Thank you again Ms. Frost ma'am, I promise I'll come get you as soon as we come back and show you the animals we picked out!" He placed his hat on his head and tipped the hat to Ms. Frost, as any gentleman would. With one last smile, he waved good bye to Ms. Emma Frost before exiting the office. The first place he would go is the cafeteria, since it was right downstairs. He knew his Katie girl would love it, he already had plans to teach her how to ride a horse, and going to an animal rescue may be a good experience for her. She was a really good judge of character, but she just needed to get that spunk back in her step.
Sean planted his cowboy hat firmly on his head as he ran down the stairs to get Katie. He figured the two of them could split up and rally up the other two, and that could make them be ready quicker. In the mean time, he was trying to remember if he could maybe grab some of the grilled burgers leftover from the cookout to pack them a lunch, just in case they run a little late and get hungry.

Shaking her head with a grin on her face, able to let her emotion show a little now that the boy had left she rose from her desk. Crossing to the still open door she looked out in the hallway to see the young Korean girl standing, no doubt practicing what she was about to say to the Headmistress. "Will you keep me waiting all morning? Come in Miss Sakong, and stop fussing please it's the weekend after all."
Emma left the door open as she walked back to pour herself another cup of tea. Her back to the child as she entered she asked when she heard her enter. "Would you like a nice cup of tea?" She turned with her own teacup and saucer in hand, a pleasant look on her face, and went over to her desk to set her cup down and wait to see if the New Mutant would respond in the affirmative.

Penny met the Headmistress' smile with one of her own and stepped through the door. "I'd love some, thank you." She followed the headmistress to the desk, and waited to be asked to sit. "Didn't mean to make you wait, you just seemed busy." She then quickly added, "ma'am" to be polite. "It's the weekend but there are so many kids. I'm loving meeting everybody."
Smiling again, Penny started talking quickly and excitedly, "I was in the garden to try to practice my power and all and ran into Ricki. That's actually why I'm here. Not Ricki but the practice. I killed one of the benches. I didn't mean to. I can get gravity to come now when I want it, which is real cool, but it just comes and flattens me and everything around me. I wanted to float because I signed up for flying and all." Penny stopped because she was rambling and after that long run on sentence she needed a breath. "I'm sorry about the bench."
Calming down now that all the excited thoughts in her brain were out, Penny stood quietly and looked to the Headmistress to see her reaction. Honestly she was more interested in what the teacher might say about her power than about the bench. It was an accident and she could help fix it. But can I still go to flying. Will I be able to fly? And how long?

Stepping over to pour the girl a cup of tea she smiled at the image of everything flattened. In simpler times I would have entreated this girl with much subtlety to use that gift for my own ends, bent her will to something sinister. But now it must be what it is, and impartially I will allow her to pick her own way path to follow. Turning back with the teacup she walked the few steps to hand it to the child.
"Hmmm, now a bench you say? Impressive. Just imagine what that would do to human bone young lady, so it seams as if you do have some level of skill with it, instinctual as it may be at this point. At least you didn't crush your own self to a pulp, did you think of that?" Emma sat behind her desk and smiled as she raised her tea. "I am aware of you wishing to fly, and who doesn't want to be able to soar with the birds above the clouds? To be sure, very few would balk at the chance."
With a lift of one eyebrow she sipped on her tea. "I had expected you to do a little more training with Iceman, and Shadowkat before you undertook attempting to fly, but seeing as how you will is enough to risk personal bodily harm I think I will allow it. Under one condition.." She placed her teacup back upon it's saucer and sat back in her plush leather chair. Elbows on the arm rests she folded her fingers together index fingers extended and placed them against her lips to pause.
