“Your words, bro…they’re like hugs.” Liv chuckled around her dwindling juice pop and smirked back at Jasper. “And my first day isn’t over yet.” It was true that her stuff getting trashed had sucked, and having to team up with the Idiot that morning had been less than ideal, but it hadn’t been all bad. Going to the animal shelter had been great. Colossus was pretty awesome for an old guy, and Sean and k’8 were a lot of fun… plus she had gotten to help pick out Chief and Moxie. That cat would probably get along great with her new German friend, actually. It really was a shame that she was the only one able to understand those of the furry and feathered persuasion.
The corners of her mouth turned down when Dante came in and sat next to her, as disinterested as possible. Her eyes flicked to him when he called her a princess and Liv glared. If that name stuck… Liv wasn’t sure how yet, but she’d kill him. Publicly. With something pointy. “Don’t worry about what my ‘little birdies’ tell me, tough stuff.” She smirked right back at him. “Although, Cuil did tell me you put on a puppet show with RAM. Wish I had gotten to see it.” Her grin returned at the thought of the Idiot getting knocked down a peg. Cuil had said that RAM had stormed off and the thought of him being off somewhere disgruntled cheered her up again.
Liv nodded a thanks to Ian when he handed her a bowl of rice and beans. "You're crazy," she said, shaking her head. "There can be only one, man. Remember that." With a sigh, she looked at the fridge. It was right there but instead of getting up to get herself something to drink she grinned and just swiped Dante’s pop. “Thanks, tough stuff. You’re too kind,” she said with a smirk. Liv eyed him, not sure if there was going to be retaliation, and noticed a grainy mark peeking out from under his sleeve. Her eyes went back up to his and she froze.
Holy shit, she’d just ripped off a convict.

The look that came upon Liv's face at that moment was one he knew well, and one he had been expecting to see much sooner upon arriving at the school. It was that looking of recognition that came with a look of pure horror, and it made a slow dangerous smirk come across Dante's face. "Whatsa matter Dolly, not having fun anymore? You look a little pale there," he said in a low taunting voice, taking another bite of his meal casually, eyes trained on her with partial amusement and also a sign of warning.
Dante had wondered for some time when the day would come when one of the students would recognize the jailhouse tattoos all over him, the particular style they each held, and what each of them meant. The one Liv saw was from his first time in the cooler for three months for assault with a deadly weapon, having get off based on a technicality since the guy that accused him got charged with rape in the first degree. The tattoo on his arms moved from his elbow to the top of his palm, the sign of acceptance into the gang branch at the USP Marion. His boy had been in at the same time as him, so his acceptance was a given. He won fights there the same way he did outside, with the help of his power whenever he felt the need for it. That particular tattoo was the one he earned when he caused a prison riot by disabling the automatic lock on the cells, allowing his gang to get back at another that messed with them.
He casually mixed the salsa into the rice and beans, his turquoise eyes firmly trained on Liv almost challenging with the additional glint of danger shining through as he stared at her. "You learn something new everyday don'tcha Princess? Go ahead, run your mouth off." He took the pop back from her hand and took a long chug, his eyes never leaving hers. Dante had a good expectation that the rest of the school would know by the end of the day and everyone was going to be staying away from the 'big bad hood' cause he went to prison several times and probably killed a guy when he was eight or whatever rumor they'd come up with.
His eye ridge narrowed as he stared at her, the same stare he gave to all those squares after they figured out what he'd done. Admittedly though, Dante was curious how she of all people recognized them. She was as street tough as a poodle it seemed, and after last night he concluded that she was pretty damn sheltered. There were others who he expected to figure it out before her, so he was damn curious as to how she could recognize the style that well.

There were certain things that Olivia Cooper would always be able to do in her sleep. They’d been drilled into her for as long as she could remember, conditioned both physically and mentally. Ride a horse. Execute an aerial. Peel a potato. She was a tree-climbing, tack-polishing, pike-pressing machine. All that was thanks to her mother's encouragement and Liv wouldn’t want it any other way. There were other things, though, things that she had never wanted to learn in the first place, but were just as familiar. Things she would never, ever forget.
Liv could get out of standard issue handcuffs in roughly thirty-seven seconds. The zip-ties took longer, almost a minute twenty. She could clean and maintain an AR-15 even though, much to her disappointment, she had never been allowed to fire one. She could recite statutes and useless bits of law on command, (duh, how else would she know exactly what rules to break?).
Those useful skills were courtesy of DUSM daddy.
Liv sat frozen a moment, pinned by Dante’s weirdly blue eyes and her thoughts drifted to her Da’s office in the basement of the Batsto farmhouse. There was a shelf of albums packed to stuffed with polaroids of arms, legs, torsos, and necks all marked with homemade brands and coarse tattoos. Living in a small town hadn’t given Liv much exposure to the real thing, but there it was, right next to her, casually shoveling food down his throat while glaring at her like he was hoping to suddenly manifest an optic blast and fry Liv where she sat. Thanks so much, Da, Liv thought with a sigh, Now you’re ruining my fun from inside my head.
It took Dante calling her a princess again for Liv to unfreeze, her eyebrow spiking up. For someone who clearly didn’t dig being judged, he was doing a fair job of it himself. “I’m no princess,” she muttered, her voice just as quiet as his but with none of the intensity. Quite the opposite, there was lightness there. Laughter. She leaned in, taking hold of his sleeve and lightly tugged it back down to cover the mark again. She smirked at Dante, taking his pop again and taking a sip before putting it right back in his hand with a smile. “And you aren’t as scary as you want to be.”

A dreamy look came on his face as his thoughts drifted to the Angel of his heart, the girl that possessed his mind and soul with a simple look of her sultry, mysterious eyes that were forever seared into his brain, haunting his dreams and never far from his thoughts. He would reveal his feeling to her, would promise her everything he could as he should have long ago. Jasper did in fact regret not saying anything to her sooner, because his fear caused him to miss out on so many possible times they could have had together. No more now though, he would make his feelings known.
Shaking out of the dreamy look and now with a bored expression, Jasper glanced up from his food to view the odd interaction going on between Dante and Liv. He watched for a moment, scrutinizing the odd look on Dante's face and Liv's own behavior before letting a smirk come over his face. "Jour just making friends all over I see, the look of your face says it all," he said with a slight laugh while he glanced at the busted lip that marred her otherwise pleasant features. It seemed all the new kids weren't having the best luck on their first days. Except Maddy, her he could honestly say he liked, along with everyone else.

"Was she talking to you? Stay the hell outta it and mind your own business. Worry about protecting your own face," Dante growled to Jasper, eyes narrowed at him for a moment, daring for him to comment further about Liv or anything that was said between them. He didn't ask what happened to her face because it was none of his business, and no one else should either. This wasn't some hick small town where everyone had to know each other's business and it grinded him that no one seemed able to stay the hell out of each other's business. All the incidents that occurred since Dante got there were all because no one could mind their own damn business, and he was seriously getting annoyed by that.
Not to say there weren't moments that it wasn't called for, but Liv was brand new, and he was pretty damn sure there was no lost love between Jasper and her. He had no more right to go poking around in her business than Dante did. With one last warning glare at Jasper, he got up and got himself a fresh soda, not bothering to retrieve his from Liv again.
No one could say for sure what his reaction to not only his taunting, but verbally confirming in a way what his tattoos meant. The look that crossed Dante's face was suspicious, masking the surprise as he studied her very carefully with his turquoise eyes, looking closely at her body language for any sign that might betray any other thoughts. Reading body language was a skill that was essential to survive in his neighborhood, something that Dante prided himself on learning at an early age. It was both surprising and intriguing that the girl wasn’t kidding, she actually wasn’t afraid of him and he didn’t believe anymore that she’d be running her mouth to anyone who would listen.
It still posed the question of how she recognized them to begin with. It wasn’t something that was common knowledge, and not just any little wannabe thug from some rink dink town would know. Gang signs and tattoos were known only to those who encountered them first hand or who learned about them from a direct outside source. Dante wasn’t going to ask though, cause right now as far as he was concerned she dug okay.

Twice in one day this guy is at my team's throat? I'm the runt, or omega or whatever stupid thing this wolf packed team's dogboy leader dude want's to call me. I got no choice but to make it mean something and right here is where I start making something of my position in this wolfpack. The decision was made and from the door where he'd been standing silently watching for a minute or more Alex stepped in.
"I don't think you want to be making threats there my friend. One of my team you attacked earlier, yes? This would make two, should you choose to lash out and attack him for simply speaking. I think it is still one of our inalienable rights, free speech, if I'm not mistaken." Looking around he tried to garner some support.
Incidentally he didn't see much being drummed up with his attempt at a rousing speech.
He did see however that he had some support in his friend Leah, and with a look of stern confidence he nodded a little to the beta of his team, Onyx, hoping the message that he definitely had his back, even if he didn't like Alex or want to need him he'd be there for him and fight by his side if Dante tried any of his New Mutant hunting. He hoped too that word of this would get back to Riker, if he was going to stay at this school he needed to make his bones with his team, and right here was where he thought he'd start.
"So, my friend, how about an apology to my teammate here, since he was obviously just saying hello to a very pretty girl in his own charming way." He took a few steps closer to Dante, smiling slyly, hoping to get him to either act or detract his threat. He felt a stirring in him then, a cunning and self protective state of mind that he tried to keep in check. If his power was truly controlled by his emotions he was not sure what would come of these feelings he was having.

SPLAT
The spoonful of rice and beans hit the center of Alex’s forehead with a rather satisfying squish and stuck there, too viscous to do more than slow-crawl down his face. It was a delicious projectile of spicy goodness… a warning shot, and Liv sat idly twirling the spoon that was responsible for launching the mess at his face. All traces of humor were gone from those wide, whiskey eyes as the new Paragon glared, her head tipped to the side in irritation. There wasn’t anything immediately impressive about the guy she had just redecorated with her dinner, or even intimidating for that matter. He just looked like some wiry jerk with an uneven haircut and an oily, slightly creepy smile. For his sake, Liv hoped that he was packing one hell of a power. Compared to Dante the kid was a guppy blowing bubbles at a shark and if a fight broke out in the kitchen… she would be betting on the shark.
Liv scowled, her spoon tapping at the rim of her bowl. Her eyes flicked to Jasper and she tried to mask her confusion. He didn’t seem much like the type who would give a flying f*ck about what someone else said to him, and he definitely didn’t come across as the kind of guy that needed defending. Liv glanced to Ian next, uncertain. She was distressed that the atmosphere of the room had shifted so drastically so quickly. This was a meal. An informal one, certainly, but a meal all the same. Shenanigans in the kitchen were a no no, and whatever these people were used to, Liv expected to be able to digest in some sort of peace. What was the protocol for dealing with a suicidal twig and a pissed off Tom Cody wannabe? She had no idea, and to be honest, she wasn’t interested in finding out. She had enough bruises for one day.
“What’s with the monologue?” Liv bit. She didn’t quite manage to swallow her disdain and annoyance dripped off each word. “This is a f*ckin kitchen, dude, not the WWE. Sit down, eat, and cork it or get out. Not one person in here needs you pretending to be a superhero while we’re trying to eat.”

Rather than say anything more, Jasper threw Alex a napkin with a smirk on his face, though most likely for a different reason than others imagined. In all reality, he was finding himself quite surprised by Alex's behavior. Not that Jasper really cared that Dante mouthed off to him or threatened him, hell he was more than apt enough of defending himself and often found himself with an apathetic attitude toward anyone that seemed to think he was defenseless. He found himself more impressed that Alex had the guts to stand up to someone like the Paragon Hood and he did it without having to defend the idiotic alleged female that had the survival skills of a lemming and enough hair on her to cover a whole family snuggly.
"Vell now, if zhat is not love zhen I don't know what is," Jasper said with a teasing smirk as he looked between Liv and Alex. "Jou should be flattered Alex, zhey say vhen a girl throws food at jou upon meeting for zhe first time, it is a destiny for love to bloom." He slid the bowl of plantains toward Alex and went back to his own bowl that was pretty much on the verge of being finished. For the first time in a good long time, Jasper found himself not completely ashamed of his roommate. True, the particular situation could have been chosen better, but it was about time the kid showed he did indeed have some guts and was at least willing to stand up for someone else on his team.
Though he didn't believe for a second that this act would make up for his previous behavior, he did think that it was a good step. Sure it would be awhile before Riker saw it or even acknowledged it, but Jasper had come to learn that it was simply the Alpha's style. He liked to make people really work for their rank, and Jasper knew from experience it was no easy journey.

Dante was snickering like nothing else for the past couple of minutes. It was completely humorous how the Spanish kid decided to 'step up' to him, threaten him at all. Back in Chicago, if some punk stepped up to any of the boys in Chi West like that, no backing, no solid ground or way of negotiating, hell the pledges took care of 'em and the higher members just laughed and stole their shit. No one threatened Dante, and he had yet to meet anyone or encounter anything that truly scared him in life, let alone a punk vato from the Barrio.
His glance flickered to Liv and he smirked wider, leaning in toward her a bit. "And here I thought you were falling for my charms, with them pretty little words how you ain't scared all while you sit next to me dolled up. You're breakin' my heart there," Dante said, the smirk on his face the kind where it was hard to tell if he was joking or not. He took a final swig of his pop and then just on principal took the one he got for Liv for an extra swig for good measure.
He had to admit, it was a smooth move on her part, though a bit messy. He had already been on the edge since he saw that someone found him out, and this kid trying to threaten him would have just taken the cake. Before he even had a chance to react, the girl handled it really well, enough for him to take notice at least. He was starting to think that being stuck at this school wouldn't be as bad as he thought, though the eye candy that walked around was enough of a reason to stick around.

"Gracias." Snagging the napkin from mid air in his grasp. As the beans and rice dropped from off his face with his rapid movement, Alex snapped his mouth at the dropping morsels of food. It was a flash of a movement and he could feel it had been something more than just his normal body movement. Inside his mouth he could taste more, it was almost that in that split-second his tongue had lashed out and he'd gotten a read on his surroundings like he had never known before, and even now in his mouth his tongue felt funny.
Reaching up with the napkin to wipe his forehead he noticed a flash of something odd in his skin and then it was gone, almost as it he'd had scales. He quickly dismissed it as something of a play of the light more or less and moved on to cleaning his face as he spoke. "Yes, yes I too have heard of this thing you speak, with the throwing of the food and I am now wondering how true this could be." His smile, genuine as he looked past Dante to Liv and wondered deeper.
"But I fear in this case my friend, that it might be wishful thinking on our part, for by her very action she has shown us something of her nature. I am quite confident though that I will be able to cure her of if given the chance. For I have also heard about these girls, they call them beanflickers, and they have a desire to" he didn't know exactly how to say what he had heard in mixed company, his respect for women been reminded him by his conflict with Riker and Lurai.
Unable not to look, his eyes shot to Leah as she was the example of what he wanted to explain. "Flick the bean?"

Liv snorted disdainfully at the slime ball, annoyance plain on her face. Well, that was the last time she was helping anyone. No good deed goes unpunished, she reminded herself angrily. Liv had lobbed food at Alex to defuse what would have otherwise been a bloodbath in the middle of the kitchen. The second the little putz had challenged Dante, Alex’s options had been the big Paragon’s fist or a little spoonful of… well, Liv didn’t know what it was, but now wished she’d just let Dante pound the kid into paste. She hadn’t expected a ‘thank you’ or anything from the skeeve, but calling her a lesbian seemed a bit extreme. It didn’t help things that his oily smile was giving her the absolute heebie-jeebies. “Excuse me for not sucking you off the minute you walked into the room,” she snapped. “But even if my standards were much, much lower, they’d still be well above you, you creep.”
With a small, disappointed sigh Liv slid off her stool and gathered her dirty dish to take to the sink. Alex had ruined her fun and she was ready to bail. Besides, Ian had said they could go hang out and that seemed like a better option than arguing with a halfwit. Dumping her bowl into the sink, Liv couldn’t resist glancing back at Jasper and Dante. As scowling and brooding as they were, both had been fun. She wouldn’t consider them friends or anything, but they were decent enough, even if they didn’t want to admit it. Jasper was just about as caustic as it got and Dante… Liv wasn’t sure yet, but she had meant what she said. He wasn’t as scary as he wanted to be.
Or maybe she was having an especially stupid day.
Liv leaned on the sink and beamed at Ian while she rinsed out her dish out. “Did you still want to hang out or are you sick of me yet?” she asked, her smirk making its way back to her face. The kitchen was suddenly far too crowded for her taste and Alex was creepy. She just wanted to go relax and maybe try to find Cuil. She hadn’t seen him since her fight with Frostbite and she was worried he was trapped in a classroom, or been blasted by another student, or some other ridiculous thing. The little sparrow was free to come and go as he pleased, but Liv felt better when he was around to keep an extra eye out. Careful to give Alex a wide berth, Liv went and hung in the doorway. “As always, it was a pleasure speaking with you…” she still couldn’t remember Jasper’s name so she just opted to shrug at the German. She threw Dante a wicked grin. “And I’m sure I’ll talk to you later, tough stuff. Ian! Come on!”

Leah's reaction was a bit delayed. At first she just stood there a little shocked at what Alex had done. Too much so to even laugh at Liv's comments. But once it had sunk in she screamed "F*ck you" at Alex and stomped out of the room, pushing Liv out of her way. Since Diesel had entered she had stood quietly without any expression on her face, except a brief nod to acknowledge her team captain when he introduced the new girl. She'd wanted to say something when Jasper had started teasing Liv, and after the whole exchange with Dante, but she knew anything she said would just make matters worse somehow. She couldn't afford to look bad in front of Diesel. But for the moment she couldn't care.
He'd promised. she thought angrily with tears in her eyes. Her best friend had promised not to tell anybody she was a lesbian and now he'd practically announced it to the room. Sure he hadn't said so in as many words but it was clear what he was alluding to and that he had stared at her. A nice subtle way to make his point, she thought sarcastically. He'd also used being a lesbian as an insult. That hurt Leah as much as the betrayal of confidences. It didn't matter that most of the other students called her a dyke already. Alex had still broken his promise. Her best friend had made her the butt of a big joke. To hell with him. I don't need friends. My own dumb fault for letting him close.
And now you're gonna let Ricki in too. What so she can stab you in the back just like Alex. F*ck them all! Katana saw no reason to try anymore. No reason to care. She wrapped herself up in the familiar armor of her tough girl persona and punched a couple holes in the wall of the rec room for good measure. It didn't really work. She was still crying. In fact, she was crying a lot harder now. She felt completely alone. Even before, with Alex still her best friend, she'd felt alone, not because of anything he had done but because of her own self loathing. She couldn't understand why anybody would care about her. She was convinced he would change his mind. She knew herself and hated herself, and so she thought anybody who got to know her would hate her eventually.
"This wouldn't happen if I was good enough," she whimpered through her tears. If she were only good enough her father wouldn't have hated her and the rest of the family enough to try to kill them all. She wouldn't be a stupid dyke. And maybe her best friend wouldn't have just humiliated her in front of Diesel and everyone. She was too tired to think about it more. She just sat there and cried, not caring if the others found her that way.

"Women." Alex said shaking his head with a slight laugh. He didn't get it at all, BUT he did think that the beans tasted great so grabbing a plantain off the plate Jasper'd slid his way he walked to the stove. Dishing himself up a bowl he went back to sit down with the other men of the combat ready class. On the same side of the table as Jasper but down a bit and far enough away from Dante to give him a second to react should the mohawked Paragon's hair trigger go off. "They have some boldness to them the women here, throwing food speaking with such disrespect for themselves and others, bold disrespect."
"I don't think I get the girls in this country. They want to be your friend, they don't want to be your friend, it's - what is the word?-" he took a spoonful of beans and rice "fickle? Yea, too much fickle for my taste. But this, this is much better from a bowl then from my face." He said shoveling in another spoonful past his grin. For a moment he wanted to run after Leah, apologize and keep hold of his one and only friend, but he thought better of it and decided to play it cool. Follow the example set by Jasper and Dante both with their calm before the storm attitudes. He enjoyed his food, chewing and making an 'mmm' sound.
"So, you never said what is your problem. With our team there my friend? What is your problem?" Alex said pointing his spoon at Dante. "Or do you not have a problem now?" He asked in a loaded question sort of way. The words flowing out almost before he realized it, almost. A challenge, yes most surely that, but not spoken openly and obviously and giving Dante an obvious way out that only a coward would take. He wasn't kidding himself though, he knew he didn't stand much of a chance against Dante. Even though he always like to root for the underdog he still didn't like his chances, at least if he took things at face value, but this was where Alex chose again to sacrifice himself for his team.
He had cut ties with Leah in an instant, not something he intended, but if he was figuring this team thing out correctly he had to focus on his team first, even before himself, and all other things after that. Besides, this quiet cunning he had begun to follow in his heart and mind was taking him to this challenge and he would not back down from the sacrifice he had chosen for himself. He embraced it then. If he had to go down fighting for a cause he would go down for his own cause, for in being one of the team and fighting for that team he was fighting for himself. True selfishness through selflessness, a concept Alex didn't even begin to scratch the surface of understanding, but after the positive reaction from Jasper the last time he tried it he thought he would again test his courage.

"Wait wait I'm almost done," Ian shoved the last of his third helping of food into his mouth. He had been going between the pots of food and his bowl for all of dinner time, so immersed that a bomb probably could have gone off near him and he wouldn't have noticed. Ian loved his food, and was always appreciative of a good meal. This one was good enough to get him to have three huge bowls of it and there was a high chance that he would be back here for more later on after he digested. "Okay, okay babe, I'm good," He said when he set the now empty glass of soda down on the table and let himself be led out of the kitchen. "See ya later bros!" He waved off to the guys and allowed Liv to drag him into the hallway.
"Man that was intense huh? I love spicy food." Ian patted his stomach as he walked down the hallway, looking down at Liv and then back at the kitchen. "Things seemed pretty tight in there with the dudes too huh? Not that I was payin' attention all that much. I kinda get distracted when I got food that good in front of me," he said sheepishly and grinned to try and not look so doofy.
"So anyways Liv babe,' he started throwing an arm around her as they got to the foyer. "Where you wanna go? I can take ya to Doc and get that lip taken care of, or we could go and play video games, or hey we got a music room if you wanna see. I don't think we got a drum set there but we got other stuff. And uh, we got a library, but I think I saw enough of that today." He shook his head and grinned down at her. "Your call babe, we can always check to see if anything is going on outside too. I'm up for anything."

~in the hall~
Liv ducked under Ian’s arm and turned on her toes so she was facing him and, walking backwards, out of reach. It wasn’t anything personal. She was just sore as hell and not a big fan of gratuitous touching. Especially with guys she didn’t know all that well. Even if they did look like Ian. “Doc?” she repeated his suggestion, her whiskey eyes going wide for a split second. “Nuh-uh. No way.” Taking a deep breath, Liv blew a raspberry and gave the big Acolyte a double thumbs down. Liv would sooner go another ten rounds with the stupid bitch-sicle than go to any ‘Doc’. There was a reason Liv always gave infirmaries and the people inside them plenty of space. She wasn’t scared… hell no. Alright, maybe a little, but who wouldn’t be freaked by the sterile, detached feel of a doctor’s office? F*ck that. No one was going to lure her into some physical with lollypops ever again. No, it would take a hell of a lot more than a busted lip and a few ice burns to get Liv into any room that smelled like disinfectant and cotton balls.
The music room was thoughtful of Ian but Liv dismissed it nearly as quickly as she had the infirmary. That was something she wanted to do on her own when she had time to really devote to it. She could spend hours in a room full of instruments and Ian didn’t look much like the type that would be entertained by girly squeals of delight. Same thing with the gym. Liv wanted to get in and get a feel for the place without others about. And the library… nah. School libraries were lame.
Finally Liv shrugged. “Outside?” she offered, grinning up at Ian. “I really just want to relax, if it’s ok. It’s been a long day, man, and I’ve had enough excitement.” She rolled her eyes at her own inability to stay out of trouble and faced front again, falling into step beside Ian. It was awful nice of him to put up with her, especially since Ian had to have had other things to do than walk around the grounds with a new girl. Not that she wasn’t thrilled to be getting back out. Liv wasn’t the type who enjoyed being walled in and the prospect of being out in the fresh air cheered her up considerably.
“So how long have you been here and all… mutant-y?” Liv asked, smirking wickedly. “I mean, I know you’re an Acolyte and that you have a cast iron stomach, but other than that…” she shrugged and slid her drumsticks out of her sleeves, rapping them idly against her legs as she walked. “I don’t even know what your power is, really.” She eyed him suddenly suspicious. Lorelai had told her about a fair few of the students the night before, but she couldn’t remember exactly who was what and what teams they were on. “You aren’t that guy with the impenetrable skin that shoots people are you?”
