Lynard Skynard's Black Betty rang through the hushed whispers and talking of the students. With a heavy sigh, Bobby stood up from the table and walked out to the hall, answering the phone with a heartbroken and crushed voice. "Mason, hey bro," he said, swallowing back his heavy heart. "Well uh, nothing is wrong that we need you guys, actually it's probably for the best that you guys are gone, cause shit hit the fan here with some stuff." The news that spread broke his heart like a shattered ice sculpture. He was extremely upset, and most of all disappointed.
Ever since he found out that there was finally another person with ice powers, Bobby was ecstatic, looking out for her, being a friend and mentor to the only other mutant that could share his experiences. He had watched Jean work with those who were telepathic and telekinetic, Cyclops work with those who needed to project their powers the right way, and many other teachers work with those that had possessed similar mutations. Just once Bobby wanted to know what it was like to have that connection with a student, to be their true mentor. With Lorelai, he found a student that he could help and work with, make things easier for her so she could have it easier than he did. She wouldn't have to face the awful frustration, the constant hardships that he did because he could help her through them and guide her. Bobby's journey to being where he was then with his powers was long, hard, and difficult. It wasn't over yet, but if his lessons could make just one other mutant's life easier, than as far as Bobby was considered it was all worth it.
It hurt because he warned Lorelai, he told her that Rumble was bad news, that he was dangerous and would hurt her. Though he recognized the signs of rebellion, he had hoped that his words of warning, his promise to be there for her if she just asked, would have some effect on her in the end. Bobby felt like he failed with Lorelai. Failed to protect her from the most dangerous person in the school, and to protect her from herself. He felt horrible right then, horrible that she didn't trust him enough to just come and talk to him and let him help her out.
"Ahhh, Cyclops is calling a meeting cause of Rumble sleeping with a high school girl and everyone finding out," Bobby said in a low voice, keeping the details out, but giving him a basic overview. "It ain't good here man, and its probably good that you took Ember out of here," Bobby said with a sigh, doing his best to hide his hurt and disappointed. "How is everything anyways, you guys got there okay? Had a good night?" He decided that a change of topic would be good for him, and maybe even cheer him up.
"Aw man, uh well we're doing good. Really good actually. We're all pretty relaxed here," Mason said rubbing the back of his neck and exchanging a glance with Tracy. He didn't mention exactly who 'we' was, and he wasn't planning to. "Won twenty four grand last night, and we got into a scuffle, but we're all good."
A sigh left Mason while he leaned forward to lean his elbow on his knee. "Cyclops okay man?" he asked in an almost tired voice, but the concern for his mentor was obvious. He didn't know where he'd be if it wasn't for Cyclops and Nightcrawler. They got him to straighten himself out, to start giving a damn about life and to start caring about himself and others. Both of them did more for Mason than he ever expected anyone would do for him, taking the time to reach out to him and get it through his thick stubborn head.
For all they did for him, Mason worried in his own way for both of them. Cyclops especially, because since Aideen joined the team the guy's been noticeably more tense. Not cause of the fire bender, but because of the her 'dedicated admirer.' Mason knew his team leader enough to see how much he connected with Aideen on a level that was different from how he related to other students. The two of them understood each other and connected on a unique level, respect and care for one another evident in even a simple command, and for the sake that Ember wouldn't allow a single negative word to be said about Cyclops in her presence. Rumble bearing down on her had its effect on their team leader, and Mason imagined that Cyclops was probably at the end of his rope.
