Kurt stood aside from them all it seemed. His heart was that of a hero, so he wanted more than anything to save all of the children, Brock included. His spirit was that of a swashbuckling warrior and as such he wanted to slay the monster within the boy, yet presiding over it all was his faith and his belief in an almighty God. In that he let himself be led, it had never failed him before.
His faith had led his heart, and stirred his spirit to feats beyond those he had thought himself capable of. It had proved itself a worthwhile attribute. In moments of doubt and in times that put it to the test, even when he found himself facing the unanswerable, he leaned heavily on that faith it never had failed him. "I for von am happy zhat my Paragons, vell almost all, are savvy enough to stay vell avay from him. Und yet I feel such an overvelming urge to put my hand to zhis situation und make it right in some vay."
With a shake of his head he said. "I know Aideen vill remain a constant in zhis, und now Brock knows zhe measure of her limit. If zhis is a bad zhing, vell not zhat I am a gambling man, but my money is on zhe firebender. It is a shame zhough, tragic in fact, zhat ve cannot come up viss a better solution to zhe dilemma facing us all. It almost seems as if ve are sacrificing many here at zhe school, actually zhe reality is zhat ve ARE sacrificing everyvon here, save for Brock. I am sorry... but zhis to me does not seem right."
Kurt shrugged his shoulders and went to say more, his mouth held open for a second and all at once thinking better of speaking further, he closed it and shook his head. He had nothing more to add to what he had already said. Simple as the concept was, he didn't believe with all the powers they possessed there was nothing more that could be done. The self sacrifice that was being asked of all of the students was not in keeping with the spirit of self sacrifice, for that must not be required or demanded, and for himself, he wanted no part of being Jephthah here at the school. He felt it best to hold his tongue, as in the book of James it was so aptly described as being like unto the rudder of a ship, so tiny a part of the vessel yet it was responsible for steering it's course.

A loud BLAMb!!! was heard from Rogue's side of the room. The chair that she kicked turned over and thankfully didn't roll into someone else. "Oh well THAT'S just GREAT!" she yelled bitterly. "We are just gonna 'teach' our kids tuh be good little girl scouts and not talk tuh the big bad man giving out free candy from the giant van with tinted windows?!?!" This was just too much for the former Paragon leader to ignore. In her eyes, Hank and Emma were dead wrong and Rumble needed to be stopped immediately. She clenched her fists, both arms on each side of her body and gritted her teeth. "Ah get this whole unwanted 'meeting of the minds' thang," she continued bitterly. "But we shouldn't be worryin' 'bout that now!"
She looked away from her X-Men, a bit bothered about letting her temper get the best of her. But she was mostly bothered that the entire picture wasn't being seen. "That guy's a monster," she continued without hesitation. There was clearly no discretion or opinions being kept at this meeting. It was all going to come out and Rogue had no problem with it. "He'll stop at nothin' tuh get what he wants and there's no genuine or good way tuh handle him. If we leave 'im alone and let Emma do her bullshit challenging, he wins. If we erase his personality- oh excuse me- SUPPRESS his personality, there's a good chance of him findin' out and what happens? Oh yeah he wins." The options were slim and Rogue didn't like it. Clearly neither did anyone else. And seeing Shan so passionate about taking over Rumble's mind was something Rogue was able to understand.
Having the memories of so many people in her head nearly made her insane. Loss of her own personality and memories were sometimes hard to keep track of. But her experience was nothing like having her mind completely taken over and not being able to do anything about it. Rogue felt for her friend and colleague, deeply than she would show. However Shan wasn't a monster, and didn't deserve to be possessed by the evil Shadow King. Looking to her, Rogue sighed heavily. "Shan," she said in a forceful tone. "You aren't him. These are two completely different situations. We are talking about the greater good here. If we do this to his mind, it will lower the risk of him harming anyone else in the school or world for that matter."
She continued by looking at the rest of the X-Men, but mostly at Emma and Hank. "There's a difference between completely controllin' someone against their will....and those who deserve it." Her last words were definitely harsh, but she had no tolerance for Rumble or any of the actions he had or has done since his arrival. "Ah remember when Mason first got here. He was a mess. Wouldn't obey authority and just got in trouble all the time. Ah was able tuh sit with him and understand why he was so full of hate. We as teachers, were able tuh channel that hate and generalize it intuh passion. Help him understand that there's so much beauty in this world that love overpowers the hate." A flood of her former and current students, and their experiences together, began to take effect.
"Rumble only has hate and doesn't care about anyone but himself. He does whateva pleases him and that needs tuh be stopped. This problem needs tuh be solved or completely dismissed... permanently." Again she pushed the envelope. However her statements was open to interpretation. She left it that was purposely so more ideas and discussions could be made. "Don't y'all look at me like that. Aideen is a person who was programed tuh kill and has a way more troubled past that most people. That girl was bred tuh kill and yet ya don't see her doing what Rumble is. Anyone could call 'er a monster but she isn't. HE is a stuck up rich boy who's daddy is too afraid tuh handle him so he gave him tuh Frosty here."
"All of our students, several Hellions included, are hard working people with a bright and hard future ahead of them. It's our job and duty tuh help 'em and teach 'em how tuh overcome all the obstacles they could, can and will face. Rumble is an obstacle that can be breached and we gotta do everythang we can to make sure that happens. That is why Ah'm here. At first Ah had my other reasons. Ah needed tuh find myself and my students helped me through that. Onyx is a student Ah am very proud of. He changed so much since he first came here and grew into a genuine and good person." It was tough to reveal some of her private matters when they weren't necessary. However Emma brought them up purposely and she had to defend herself.
"Ah would do anything for any of the students in this school... But NOT for Rumble." She headed toward the door, wanting to get the heck out of the room. She was too mad and really wasn't going to argue about something that clearly didn't have a point anymore. At the end of the day, it was Emma's decision and Rogue wasn't going to prove her point any further. She looked back at Emma before touching the door knob and glared at the White Queen. "Bringin' up my reasons for stayin' isn't anyone's business but mine. And Ah got no problem shuttin' you up Emma."

"Stand fast Rogue!" Scott barked at her. His tone was not denigrating, simply commanding and believing he had to step in at this point and take charge he did so. "We cannot run from this situation any more, we've turned it into a game of paddy-cakes for far too long now and I am done playing games with Rumble."
When he was satisfied that Rogue was not going to leave he spoke. "Come back over and have a seat Rogue. We all need to step back from this and look at it objectively. We need a plan of action regarding Brock, and no one leaves until we reach it." He scanned the eyes of every X-Man in the room trying hard not to take sides, this was neither the time or place for some power struggle. He needed them all to see him as impartial, yet his passion over what was becoming of the school was hard to quell.
"Alright, so wiping his mind is a non-option, since Emma has said she will not do it. Therefore we are left with dealing with the demon we know... at least it will be a fair hand we deal him, not that he plays fair." He checked himself before he got too far afield of his chosen attitude. "So we need to make him accountable for his actions. We also have to be able to bust him down if the need arises."
"Since he is old enough to be considered an adult we could knock the tar out of him, but because he is still a student that presents us with an entirely different set of parameters we are obligated to treat him with." He was brainstorming and he ran a finger over his lips as he walked around behind Xavier's desk. He kept strolling as he spoke looking out of the glass doors onto the balcony and then into the sky. Clouds hung there still in the air, waiting patiently, just as the rest in the room waited for his next words. "Expulsion...."
"Hmmmm." He thought for a second "Is not an option. That would force him into retaliation at best, and a bid for world domination at worst. Magneto and the Brotherhood would grab him up quicker than Burns can piss off Logan. The last thing we need is him out there in the world, given an excuse to let loose." He turned around..... slowly..... and said... "If he were an X-Man he'd be subject to a different set of rules, and we would be able to enforce those rules as we see fit. He would not have the option to call foul on us and quitting as I understand, having watched him all these years, is not in his character makeup. I would hate to smear the image, tarnished enough as it is of the X-Men, but aside from euthanizing him I don't see too many other options to deal with him effectively. Do any of you?"

The second the words left Cyclops' mouth, Pitor's head snapped in his direction. The suggestion of Rumble being an X-Men was so absurd and so wrong that it almost made him want to laugh. He didn't know whether to burst into laughter or stand there with his mouth open like a fish in shock. It took him a moment before he chose the latter and added an incredulous look that fell on his face. "Is this a joke? Surely you are not serious... are you?" he asked in disbelief looking at Scott, blinking a couple of times before sitting down on one of the chairs.
"Rumble on the X-Men... this is certainly not something I ever expected or hope to see." He shook his head in shock and felt his stomach turn at the thought. "He would not follow any rules on the X-Men anymore than he does as a student... and who is to say he would accept? He hates all of us save for Emma," Piotr observed, still blinking in dubiety at the whole situation. He visibly shuddered only thinking of what Charles would say to the idea of a sociopath like Rumble joining the X-Men. Then again he did invite Sabretooth to join them several times... Still Piotr felt that Sabretooth had more reason within him than Rumble did. Oh what are we coming to?

Eyes wide as saucers, Shan took a step back to look at Cyclops. She would go to extremes if needed to keep them from mind wiping Rumble, but inviting him on the team was a tactic that she wasn't expecting. "Oh my, Scott you can't be serious? But..." Shan was as well at a loss for words. She had come a long way since she was rescued by the Professor with the twins from Vietnam, and was more than able to take care of herself against even the most powerful opponent, but there was something about Rumble that did truly frighten her. He was a black soul, with no heart and no compassion in his entire body. Even the worst of them had at least an ounce of compassion for something. The only thing that ever seemed to rattle Rumble was Ember, and not even to the point of compassion.
"Pete's right, please don't take offence Scott, but he detests the existence of you and Logan. I can't ever see him agreeing to be in a situation where he is forced to work with either of you," Shan said honestly and bit her lip nervously. "I don't think there is anything that we could offer him to change that, but... oh I don't know, I don't like the idea at all. There's nobody worse than him to be a member of the X-Men. I don't want you to mind wipe him but I don't want him on the team..." She shuddered and took another step back, making Kitty's arm on her shoulder slide off. This was a twist she never expected.

"I don't think I want him on the team either. I see right through your little ploy Scott Summers, and I think it's pretty despicable... clever, to be sure, but don't think for one minute you have anybody fooled." She walked over to stand face to face with him and placed her hands on her hips. "You don't want him on the team as a member, you only want to try and control him and when that fails you intend to hurt him. Oh so very noble of you, but we all know he would never accept any offer to join the X-Men, Peter and Shan are correct in that."
She turned her back to him and walked back to sit against the edge of the desk. She would have sat behind it but, as Charles had been bound to his wheelchair, there was no seat. "So let's see... shall we entertain your little Gedanken experiment? Walk through it to it's logical conclusion, it's preordained failure...?...OR, can we just ignore this excursion into the absurd and get on with our lives. I will say this once more so you get it-" she held up a single finger, her index finger because she was a lady. "He only does what he wants to do. Sooo, how do you expect to make him want to be an X-Man Scott? He has it too easy right where he is, and he's no fool, he knows none of us want him on the team."

"Simple..." and shame on anyone who thinks I don't know how to manipulate as good as the next guy... but more shame than ten times as much as that on me Scott thought as he looked around the room at his family. He knew they thought of him as the stalwart soldier, a noble leader keeping everything 'above board' and never one to cross that line, the line that separated the chivalrous from the conniving. He liked to think of himself that way as well, but too many times had he tread on that line and crossed it, more and more frequently in recent times than ever before.
He didn't want to say it because by saying it the mere utterance of it would change things. Change was imminent and necessary though, it was the way of things. It was the very nature of life itself and it was what they all were the living embodiment of as Mutants, Homo Superior... the next breed of humanity.. a change from the last. He wasn't sure he wanted change, and he knew he didn't want the cost of it, but he also realized that it was not always what he wanted and that sometimes it was what was required.
'The Job' of being the leader of the X-Men was not always neat and clean and most times people got hurt. This time it was he himself who would wind up wounded, and more deeply by his own contrivances than by any blast, blade or bomb. His own thoughts and plans were hurtful to him and as he spoke he recalled that it was 'for the greater good' he had come to it, his realization and his decision... shameful as it was... and it was time to share with them all what lure he knew would bring Rumble crawling and begging to join them. ".... Ember!" He said it, and with the saying of her name stabbed himself through the heart to lay his own, his favored, as a sacrificial lamb on the altar.

"Whoa," Kitty said taking a step back as well. That was not something she was expecting or even fathomed. "Let me get this straight, your gonna take Aideen, who let's face it Scott we all know she's your favorite, put her on the X-Men as bait for Rumble? Ouch... that's... well... its a very devious and clever plan," she said slowly looking up at him with wide eyes. "But.. wow thats a bit cold huh?" She didn't know how to think, since she wanted to dish some of her own revenge on Rumble and him on the team would be a good way to do it. At the same time it meant using another to get their way, and Kitty couldn't help but be conflicted on that.
"You know, if Logan was here I don't think he'd like that you want to use her like that," Kitty said slowly after thinking about it for awhile. The only thing she knew about Aideen was that she was incredibly obedient and never gave anyone trouble, but there had to be something more with the shine that Logan took to her. She never liked speaking for anybody, but knowing Logan she could conclude pretty well what he would say. Kitty sighed with resign and shrugged. "That's a heavy plan, but as much as I hate to say it, it would work."

If the meeting wasn't surprised enough, Hank was certainly surprised now. His head snapped at Scott in astonishment and shock, adjusting his glasses on his face to see if he heard right. While Kitty gave her own reaction, his mind mulled over the thoughts that came to him instantly. It took him a moment after Kitty finished to begin to speak. "First off, I want to go on the record that I had entertained bringing up the idea of inviting Ember to the X-men." Hank looked at each of them pointedly and held his head high. "I've been speaking to her, and running tests on her for several weeks now, she is in short one of the most brilliant young ladies I have ever had the pleasure of speaking with. She is incredible with solving puzzles, at par if not better than any one of us, knows more about worldwide cultures than anyone I've ever met. And quite honestly, I think she would be more value as an X-Men than a mere student, and she would have earned it and deserves it in every degree. Now if we were to ask her for that, I would wholeheartedly support and encourage it."
It was now that Hank looked at Scott, his longtime friend with a serious and sternness that he picked up from Charles himself. "What I say now, is that I hope if you invite her for your reasons Scott, you will understand the weight of that decision and the consequences of it. I would hope that you would tell her the reasons behind the invitation, if you don't she will never trust any of us again. And if you do, she will never forgive you for putting Rumble above her when she tries so hard to cut off all ties with him. Aideen works hard to please you most of all, and knowing that you put your desire for getting a shot at putting Rumble in his place over all she has worked on will cut off any personal tie she has to you," he said in an honest voice of warning. He didn't have a degree in Psychology for nothing, and though he never talked about anything with Ember in detail on her life, the things they did talk about told him a great deal about her.
Hank looked at Scott for a moment longer and then sighed. "I would suggest that you think this through carefully, because some things are not worth sacrificing. If you truly believe that she would make the X-Men a richer and more complete team, than I support that decision one hundred percent. However if you invite her to use her as a tool for another purpose, she will most likely accept either way, but it will forever put her at a distant from the rest of us because she would never see herself as part of us, only as a tool to the team." It were words that were as true as the belief and emotion behind them and Hank hoped it knocked some sense into his dear friend.

"All of that is true, and yet in my heart of hearts I know that even though she is more than ready and would make a great asset and a wonderful addition, I really had hoped to give her a chance to be a kid for a little while longer. You have read her jacket Hank, you know what she's been put through and it's why she is who she is. I wanted to, more than anything, give her a chance to grow in ways she never had a chance to before... to explore herself in a different way and challenge herself to become less the killing tool she was bred to be." Scott shook his head as he found a seat on the couch.
"I didn't say I wasn't conflicted over this," he said looking into his blue furred brother's face "it's not an easy thing to decide on, but YES! You are correct in every aspect of what you said, and YES! I do want her on the team for more than just a bit of fresh bait. Who do you think I am? But the reality of it is that she will say yes, if and when we ask her. I just don't know if I really want to set those wheels in motion...." He took a breath and thought about the state of things as they were in the school and the state of things to come. He knew about the tiny pebble cast into the lake and how the ripples would, no matter how small they might seem, reach out to touch every bit of the shoreline. Ember was more to him than a pebble, more than a lamb led to slaughter, she was his hope for the future and strangely he saw himself in her.
"...and then I think to myself 'they are already spinning' and some have argued they are out of control." He looked right at Rogue and then Shan. "It occurs to me now though," he stood and it was as if something filled him, and an inner light glowed. The tone of his voice changed to something they were all far more familiar with from him. His command voice had returned. "that if we make her an X-Man we get the best of both worlds. We get an exceptional and more than ready, willing and capable individual to join our ranks AND we get to keep Rumble away from her, plus striving to fulfill our expectations of him in order to... if we cleverly plant the seed in his mind... hope to join our ranks as well. This might work out even better this way than I had allowed myself to consider." He looked around at them all measuring their expressions. "What is the consensus?"

A small smile came from Shan now, the first one since she spoke about her children earlier in the meeting. "I think its a great idea!" she said smiling wider and eyes shining. She liked the girl very much and was delighted for the chance to work with her, to get to know her more. She had often wondered what was Cyclops motivation to keep her on as a student, being that she was overqualified for that rank, but now she could understand much better his point of view on the situation. Shan didn't know too much on Ember's history, only that she had it rough and was trained very carefully to be what she was today. Whatever it might be, she only knew that the vibe she got from Ember gave her a good idea how dangerous the girl really was.
"Well if it helps ease your mind Scott, I... think I could say that you did let her have that childhood experience. She's more at ease with people now, and I wish you could see how well she is with Chopper. It's something I never would have thought her to be capable of when she first arrived." Shan smiled at him sweetly and stood up straighter, feeling much better on the whole situation. "I say we go for it! I say its the best choice we have made in awhile."

"I do agree viss Shan, in zhat Ember has had zhe opportunity to become more zhan she vas vhen she first arrived here." Kurt said with a smile coming to his face. "I remember vhen ve first met und she vas as cold as a stone at zhe bottom of a stream vhen zhe first varmpth of spring melts off vinter's icy grasp. Vhat a contrast her personality vas to her pahver at zhe time, bending fire und yet inside a frozen tundra."
He recalled their first meeting and the militant way she presented herself to him in Emma's office. He thought it was a joke at first and chortled slightly, but upon the realization that she was not playing he chided himself for his insincerity. "It is readily apparent zhat she has become so much more comfortable viss herself und zhe people here. In her own vay it seems she has found a place in all of our hears, and I for von vould be more zhan pleased to have her on zhe X-Men. I have missed vorking viss her, und I know she vould be brilliant. She simply knows no ozher vay to be. I vote a resounding YES to inviting her!"

"Hmm... ok so I don't mind the idea either," Bobby said slowly thinking on it for awhile. He didn't know Ember all that well and from what he did know he liked enough, but she was dangerous, he saw a first hand display just the other day. "I don't know, my question is if well she can be I guess uh... curbed on that killing part and all," he said hesitantly. Bobby was firmly against the extreme violence, though he did at times understand the need for it at times. When Wolverine first came, he made Bobby really nervous just because of his nature as well, and the first couple of missions with him were a bit nerve racking for him. Sure Bobby was used to him now, but it was weird in the beginning. What freaked him out was that Ember was a whole lot younger and she was in some ways less apt for refraining from the extreme.
"Don't get me wrong I think she's a cool chick for someone so hot," he laughed at his own joke, the constant puns between hot and cold never growing old for him. "But I saw her on Thursday, and if I hadn't stepped in she woulda killed Rumble. And yea okay, after the crap she put up with for the past couple of months, he woulda deserved it, but still man, it was scary. Like she's really little ya know? And yea Kitty I know size don't matter." He looked pointedly at her knowing what her argument would be, since it wasn't their first on the topic because of his teasing. "But look at Rumble man, he's a big guy. It was weird to see. My point is that I like Ember, and it'd be cool to have her on the team, I just... well I don't want anymore violence than we already have, thats all," Bobby said with a slight shrug rubbing the back of his neck nervously and looking at all of them almost sheepishly since his response was less than enthusiastic as the others.

"Size means nothing Bobby, I whipped your butt in sparring enough for you to know that," Kitty said with a slight smirk to prove her point. She also waved off the whole thing for Ember's breeding to kill to be an issue. "If Logan can be curbed so can Ember. Besides she avoids all conflict in general and doesn't look for violence, resorting to it as a last result. I'm not worried about her for that," she said just from her simple observations of the students.
"Honestly that's not even my issue. I think that Ember would be awesome to have on the team, but there are other people in line though. What about Ironclad? He's been training to be an X-Men since his turnaround. And Tracy? She's always there when we need her and she deserves it too. Even Stoney has really been turning it around. What about them?" Kitty pointed out. True it was a little bias since she considered all those she mentioned her friends. Her and Tracy were pretty close, and she knew Mason really well too. She been waiting for them to get their chance at joining too, and she didn't think that it was fair to jump someone up in line just cause they were convenient.

"As much as I would like to take a side against the girl joining for personal reasons, I cannot and I will not, for that would just be petty of me. I will however say that in so much as those other young adults are concerned, we do not promote from a sense of seniority or tenure. There is now and has always been, as I am sure you of all people will recall from when you were asked to join Kitty, something else required, something... intangible?" she smirked at the double meaning and the underhanded and thinly veiled insult in the guise of a compliment to Kitty. Surely saying the girl had that intangible quality, but also cheapening it by implying that it was merely her phasing power that was required at the time.
"They might have that quality in some regards yet they are lacking some fundamentals. Lets look at them all without the emotional connections and friendships we have forged with them and see the reality of what they bring to the table." She leaned forward some and readjusted her footing, the spiked heels of her boots stabbing clickity click on the floor. Her face moving into a look less that of taunting the young counterbalance to her own weight with the X-Men and the school. Kitty and she were the furthest from friends and in a way it worked to the advantage of everyone, X-men and students alike.
"Ironclad has some wonderful abilities and skills and as a Team Captain he is exceptional. However, he, like all of them, have issues to address. His difficulty stems from his overprotective nature... he cannot be relied upon to keep from putting himself 'out there', as we all know he does, relying on his power to keep him safe, and jeopardizing other aspects of a mission. It is a foregone conclusion that he has trust issues with allowing others to fend for themselves, a personality quirk that any villain worth their weight in salt would easily capitalize on." She looked at Scott and raised an eyebrow.
"HeartString, and I think she is a dear person, is far too distrusting of herself. She has only recently begun to give herself a chance to see her own potential be realized, and stood for the just the briefest of time now on her own two feet. She will one day prove worthy I am sure, but not now, she has a long way to go. It might be those two have finally found each other as mates because of their co-dependent nature and it will be interesting to see what becomes of it as she learns to rely on herself more and he sees she can." Emma's musing on possible events to come entertained her but she pressed on.
"As for Stoney.. he still finds himself under the yoke of tyranny that is his team. As I had built them on a system of undermining one another and the worst of the bunch, the most heinous one would be on top, he has found himself on the bottom standing there confused over it since the start. He would have been a wonderful Corsair I think, but that was not for him as it turns out. No, he has hammered out a place on the Hellions as he needed to or be ripped apart, and done what he was told. He needs to find his backbone and stand up for himself.. he may be close, but as of yet that time is not here for him, and the moment is not yet his to own."
"This brings us to Scott's star pupil, and would that any of us could take credit for the weapon she is, but that was none of our doing. That which she found herself lacking was a sense of connection, a belonging, and a reason to fight and to survive... a reason that was her own. For a weapon is merely a tool of killing that one wields and she needed to evolve beyond being a mere weapon, otherwise anyone she saw as being her commander would be able to use her, wield her as they saw fit." She looked at Bobby then. "It would appear that given her recent outburst she has claimed the right to wield herself, and chosen to respect authority as well. I would say that qualifies as the 'intangible' required."
"I knew she was not far from being ready. In Limbo she was an amazing thing to behold, yet so completely empty inside, and lacking. It was there that her shortcomings seemed so apparent, even as her power was increased a hundred fold." Emma nodded slightly as she said "I will have to endorse her admittance to the X-Men as well. Even though she has some self imposed restrictions to her power, which reside in the realm of simple physics and Beast will do better to explain, I do not think she will be ready to give up her physical form for quite some time if ever. That being the case, her potential might never be reached... and that is probably a blessing in disguise."
