Leah answered the easy question first. "You didn't do anything. Some new kid. He's invisible and a real jerk too. He sneaks up and slaps us both on the ass." Her telling of the story was abbreviated and not quite accurate, but it got the point across well enough. She did not want to go into detail. "I think he's gone now." And then she stopped leaving only an awkward silence and Kyle's unanswered question.
Sorry for almost getting you killed, she wanted to blurt out. She wanted to tell him that seeing him unconscious had made her feel like she was dying inside. But mostly she was sorry he was back. Because while she was happy that he seemed pretty recovered and that he was allowed back and all, seeing him was hard. She was not really quite sure of her feelings. The guilt was only part of it. There was also this strange attraction.
She cared about him, she wanted him to like her, and she wanted to spend time with him. And she felt a way around him she didn't feel around her friends. All the things a girl is supposed to feel about a boy she likes, but then she wasn't into boys. At least she didn't think she was. Since there was no spark of lust with that feeling. And she had those lusty feelings when certain girls came by. So here she was thinking she had everything figured out and starting to accept her feelings and along comes Kyle and nothing makes sense anymore. Well, that and the guilt which just made the whole thing worse. So she'd avoided him.
"Uh, thanks," she said and took the bottle of water. Leah drank slowly, thankful that it gave her a perfect excuse not to speak. "Let's go." She gestured for Kyle to follow and left the courtyard, waving goodbye to Donna and the other girl, as she headed towards the trails. Once out of earshot of the other girls, she said. "I'm sorry I got you in so much trouble. Running was stupid. I was stupid. I'm glad your OK."

He nodded his head in understanding about how Apogee had acted. A sigh of relief escaped, knowing he didn't cause more trouble with the new students. He couldn't help thinking about being able to turn invisible, and all the trouble he could get into. He laughed to himself bit and took a drink.
It got quiet for a moment as they both stood there. Kyle still wasn't sure of what was going on between Leah and himself. They were getting close, and he had always enjoyed hanging with her. She had never freaked out or went off on him before. He had seen her lose her temper before, but he had seen other people here lose their temper as well. He still didn't know why she wasn't on the paragons anymore either. He was about to ask when she spoke up again.
He shook his head as she began to apologize. She hadn't forced him to run from the school. He had been just as stupid in doing it as she had been. As much as Chase for going with us. "Oh, Please, you don't need to be sorry Leah. You didn't force me or anything. I wanted to go. And I'm fine. I'll be as good as new in no time. I just have to get myself back in shape is all. Too much idle time. Though I have to say your looking good though." He grinned and winked at her with his usual smile. He still did like Leah, she was one of the few that he actually got along with. He threw the comment out there to try and get a feel of how she felt about him still. He had no idea anymore, and he didn't know how to approach it. Kyle figured he would try and flirt a bit with her to see how or if she responded. He gave a look over once more and then started along the path with her. "So, you missed me huh?" She hadn't actually said she missed him, but he did miss seeing her.

"Yes," Leah replied. "I missed you." Things had gone better than she had hoped. He was not blaming her for what had happened, or at least he was being nice enough to not tell her he blamed her. In any case, she had her friend back, which was more than she had hoped for when she had seen him in the rec room. "And, thanks." Still he had also said she was looking good and that had her thinking. Is he being polite? Is he flirting with me? Oh, god, what if he's flirting with me. I don't want to hurt his feelings and I don't want to lead him on. And I don't want to talk about...ugh. She quieted her thoughts. Overanalyzing things and getting herself worked up would not help. She just had to act naturally and take things as they came. He probably was over their little crush anyway.
"So how's it been going for you?" she asked with a hint of concern in her voice. "Being back and all." She hoped the Paragons were being nicer to him than they were to her. Chase at least seemed to like Kyle before he left and hopefully would still be his friend. While she hated, well at least strongly disliked, Chase, she wanted Kyle to have at least one friend on the team. She doubted he would get along well with the others. Her impression before Kyle left was that Lian and Sky were not too fond of him, and he didn't seem like Hemlock's type. As for Allure, she was nice and maybe Kyle might get along with her, even if Leah had ruined any chance for herself by acting like a real bitch toward her because the girl was just so perfect it drove Leah nuts. She could at least have one stupid flaw. "I didn't get on so well with the Paragons, but they really aren't that bad, you know. Well except for Sky and Lian."

He chuckled to himself when she asked how it had been going for him since his return. "Well, lets see. I got punched in the face, I was electrocuted, I ripped a muscle in my calf, I had my knee buckled, I had my nuts kicked to my chest, and my team isn't sure about me. So yea, I'm doing great. It's almost like I never left. Except I,m not being attacked by people trying to destroy the school, it's my own school mates." He shrugged a bit after thinking about all that happened. All that was in the past now, he had to move on.
"Now I'm here walking with you. We will wait to see if I get hit here as well." He laughed and then winked with his cocky smile on his lips. The path started to get a bit steeper to walk up. His leg was starting to ache a bit, but he needed to work it out. He took another long drink, then looked over to Leah again. "So, whats been going on with you?" He asked, still trying to get some idea of where she stood with him.

"Not planning on hitting you. You can relax" Leah said with a forced laugh. "I'm ok. Nothing happening really." She did not feel much like telling him about how she had alienated everybody, especially now that it sounded like he was having similar problems. "I do my homework sometimes. That's about it." She wasn't sure how much he knew, and if he did know whether he would want to avoid her to boost his own standing. "See Ms. Frost a lot. She's helping me work through some stuff."
"And I'm on the Acolytes now, she added, "but you knew that, right?" She looked over to gauge his reaction and then continued. "Guess I just wasn't a Paragon. Not sure I'm an Acolyte either but some of them are real nice. Really going to try to make it work." She stopped herself from saying more.
Even before Kyle had left he had made enemies of Diesel and Haven. And here Leah was counting Haven as maybe her friend. Well, not a friend, but at least as somebody who was giving her a chance, and even stood up for her and all. Sh*t, this is going to be too complicated. She was not ready to give up her friendship with Kyle, but managing it without making Haven hate her and Diesel hate her more would be a hat trick. You don't know he hates you, she pointed out to herself. She also knew she was making unflattering assumptions about Haven. She felt they were grounded though as the girl had tried to blow up the school and then later beaten the tar out of Frostbite. I may throw fits, but she's completely insane. Being on the receiving end of that was a scary prospect. Screw it and screw them, she thought. I'll chose my own friends.
Deciding to be done with the drama, Leah let herself just enjoy the hike. "So you up for a bit of a run?," she asked with a big smile, "I'll race you out to the lake."

He had listened to Leah mention the Acolytes and a frown formed on his lips. Out of all the teams here, the Acolytes seemed to be the bane of his existence. Diesel and Haven. He was so confused how everyone could so easily accept Haven after what she did. He knew she was still evil, she had tried to kill Kyle in the Med lab. She said it was an accident, and he still couldn't prove it wasn't, but deep inside he knew it was on purpose. No one would convince him otherwise. Diesel was still pissed about his outburst and the things he said, but Kyle had apologized for that, and even took a hit for it. If that wasn't enough and he wanted to hold a thick headed, pussy whipped grudge, then that was on him. Of course Kyle didn't voice this to Leah. Unfortunately he still wasn't sure what Leah thought of him or them.
"Well I'm glad Ms. Frost is helping you, Beast has been trying to help me with my power. So far it's not going so well." He shrugged as he mentioned it. There was nothing he could do, but give it time, and hope Beast could figure it out. "And I hope you can make it work with your Team. I'm still having difficulty with the Paragons, mostly because I had to leave and they feel like I abandoned them. But I'll get by, I always do." he grinned and winked at Leah.
He turned to look at Leah as she actually mentioned a race. He reached for his dial instinctively ready to speed himself up, but he had to stop himself. Beast had warned him about using his power. he was still to cocky to refuse a challenge though. "A race? With me? have you forgotten who I am?" His brow was raised as he looked to Leah sarcastically. Then without warning he called out, "You're on!" And he took off running. He gave himself whatever advantage he could. he ran and a visible limp could be seen from his knee and hamstring damage he had. The muscles were recently healed and very tight. He would need to work them out sooner or later.

Kyle's grin and wink did not reassure Leah. A wink, really? she thought. That's fake. She knew Kyle was pretty self confident, and that was one of the things that drew her to him, but it seemed like too much of a production for a simple question. That and she knew the Paragons. They were going to treat him just like they treated her. Worse, she thought, he's too independent. They're f*cking lemmings. Every kid trying to be just like the others and still thinking they were so very cool. And the wouldn't give him any leeway for his power not working so well no matter what Beast might say.
Great, and you challenge him to race. Smart, girl. Real smart. "Yeah, I remember." she said, "but if you're hurt we don't..." Kyle was already running as she completed her sentence, trailing off quietly with "have to go." F*ck Leah ran off after him. Even with his visible limp it was hard to catch up. She wasn't in great shape. Skipping most of her PE classes and team trainings, eating junk, and doing little exercise and no training on her own had not left her in great shape. Her old worn out sneakers also got no traction on the dirt path. She didn't manage to catch up with Kyle. Instead she slipped and fell down hard with a loud exclamation of "Jesus."
"I'm OK." she called out. "Just a klutz." She sat up on the ground and brushed the dirt off of herself. Then she waited for him to come back. "Kyle. Can I ask you something?" She didn't give him the chance to say no or yes before continuing, "Why'd you come back? I mean, I'm glad you're here and all, but your folks had you home. You look normal. Actually you look great. You could go to a real school. I thought you hated this place."

Kyle had started feeling good. He was running, his body was feeling a good stretch and burn. The weather was great and the air felt good. He didn't need his power to feel the good right then. His limp was slowing him down, but not much. The fact that his knee and hamstring held up had driven him on more. He thought Leah would have caught up to him by now. Then he heard her call out.
Coming to a stop he turned to see Leah on the ground brushing herself off. She didn't seem in any real pain, and wasn't holding her knee or ankle. He was relieved that she hadn't taken to hard a spill. He jogged back over and crouched down, pulling out his water, and took a long drink. "Hey, you alright?" He looked her over a bit looking for any blood or scrapes.
The question caught him a bit off guard. Tilting his head a bit he sat back on the ground and rested his arms on his knees. "Why?........" He seriously thought about this for a moment. he really wanted to say that he missed it here, and that he missed all his friends and the teachers, but that just wasn't true. He didn't have that many friends here, and even more enemies. he had suffered a lot here before and after he returned. never had he experienced so much pain, both mentally and physically.
"You want the honest truth?" He didn't wait for the answer to that. he reached up and ran his and through his white hair. "There is no where Else I can go. I wasn't getting better at home. In fact my power was getting worse and causing all kinds of havoc on my body. My parents really could not take care of me or help me. As far as looking normal or even good? hell yea I do. But it seems my good looks only translate well here. Those regular schools seem to look down on 'Frankenstein' bolts." he held up his hand, showing his larger silver control disc and then pointed to his temple and neck disc's. "Sure among the other freaks here I definitely stand out, thats prob ally why they hate me so much." he chuckled as he said that. "But, seriously, this is the only place that I can get help. I couldn't be a burden to my parents anymore. besides....." he stood up and offered his hand to help Leah up. "You would prob ally be all heart broken if you never saw me again". He pulled the wide smile to his lips again.

"Devastated." Leah said as she took Kyle's hand and got up off the ground. 'Oh, and I'm OK."She felt sorry for Kyle. He still hated this place and now he had to come back because nobody else would have him. She wanted to punch his parents. They couldn't help him, yeah right, she thought. Wouldn't. They ship him off here so he won't ruin they're perfect little lives. Like they couldn't have found a doctor. She didn't care if she was being a bit unfair to judge people she didn't know without knowing all the facts. As for a school for Kyle, given the way the kids had treated him here she somewhat doubted he really would be worse off in a regular school. His dials really weren't that noticeable and looked to her like they could be covered. "I'm sorry you had to come back, but glad you did. If that makes any sense."
It made her think about life outside the school. As much as she was trying to turn things around she half expected to screw up again and have Ms. Frost revoke her probation. Even if she played her cards right and was allowed to come back in the fall, she had not approached the headmistress about the summer. She had reassured herself that she would be OK away from the school since with she had a little better control of her mutation now and could try to hide it. Whatever institution she was sent to would still be horrible, but without her mutation out in the open she might be able to make some friends and get through it. That Kyle couldn't get by in the outside world even with parents and with his dials, that she felt were easier to hide, made her heart sink.
"This place isn't that bad," she said, compared to everyplace else, she thought. "I'm hoping I can stay now. I screwed up really bad after you left," she added. She figured she might as well tell him. He would hear it from everybody else sooner or later, and they would not give her the benefit of a doubt.

His brow raised up as she spoke of this place. 'Isn't that bad? Are we in the same place?' He though to himself. He had to wonder if this was the same girl who he had run away with to get away from this place. Of course when he had left he was going through a serious mental breakdown and wasn't in the best of conditions. Now that he was feeling better and understood more about what was happening to him, he still wished he didn't have to come back. His welcome back had been less then enthusiastic. Kyle had determined to make the best of it no matter what.
He reached into his pack and pulled out a couple cereal bars and offered one to Leah. "Of course it's not that bad. You would be a fool not to want to stay now that I am back". His cocky smile was almost infectious. "Hell, beats sitting at home in my room, listening to my parents......" He trailed off not finishing the sentence. Ripping the cereal bar wrapper open with his teeth he took a large bite.
Between chewing he asked "So, how did you screw up? Did you pin cushion one of the students?" He grinned as he asked, trying to lighten the conversation up a bit.

Leah took the cereal bar and weakly tried to smile back at Kyle. "Yeah, you make it better," she said trying to gauge whether he was just being his usual cocky self or was trying to flirt with her. "Worse than pin cushions. I flipped out on people and sh*t. You know screaming at everybody, storming out of classes, and trying to be a real bad ass." She paused to let what she had said sink in and to watch her friend's face. "A lot of stuff happened before I got here. I've just been angry at the world and scared, you know. So scared I had to act real tough to fool myself into not being scared. Just made everybody hate me. Hanging with me won't make you popular." There, I said it, she thought. Everything was out in the open now and Kyle could make his own decisions.
Yeah, now comes the part where he tries to let you down gently, she thought acidly. Or he could just run. He's good at that. She knew that was unfair to him but she didn't care. She was steeling herself for rejection and thinking it made her feel a little bit more ready. Besides there would be a silver lining to him deciding not to be her friend anymore. She would not have to deal with his trying to flirt with her. Then she wouldn't have to tell him, or deal with her own confused emotions. She could just hate him. That was nice and simple.

The sun was higher and it was getting warmer. The time was trailing by after the walk, the trail, the race and the conversation, Kyle was glad to have the cereal bars to snack on. He looked to his watch and noticed the time. Wow it's well past lunch time, he thought and out there was just as good as a place then any to have lunch and he was happy with what he had to eat. He listened to Leah as he chewed and then laughed a bit handing her a couple of cereal bars.
"Looks like when I left you fell apart huh?" he laughed again at the joke as he took a seat beneath a tree and leaned up against it. "Well I kinda went through the same stuff before I left. I flipped out on people for no reason, when they didn't deserve it and said some bad things about others. I even mouthed off to Cyclops. And they took me back. I am sure it would take a lot more then that to get you kicked out of here for good. I mean Come on! Haven turned on the entire school and caused all kind of damage and destruction and she is Beast's f#@%ing assistant!" That was still a sore spot to him after the incident in the Med Lab and being electrocuted.
"Besides, I told you how I have been welcomed back, does it look like I am winning any popularity contests? Hell my own team isn't even sure if they want me around. So don't worry about my popularity. I look at it like this. Whether or not they like me or hate me. Just about everyone here knows who I am. And when I get my act together and power together, NONE of them will be able to touch me or hold me back. I'm done worrying about what all the other students think, and you should be done with it too. Real friends will be there no matter what." As he finished talking he took a long drink and finished the small lunch.
"I guess we'll call that lunch then." He stood up dusting himself off he wasn't sure if she wanted to continue or head back? "Much as I hate to do it I'm gonna head back in, gotta watch out. Not a hundred percent yet ya know." Kyle was making excuses for hurrying them back as he got them turned around for home. On top of it all he was getting the impression that flirting with her wasn't going to do either of them any good, his obvious flirts were shrugged off, and the things they were talking about were a bit to serious. He offered his usual cocky smile that he had recently seemed to have found again and reached up running his hand through his white hair waiting to see what she said.
