After a nice slasher movie, filled with blood, gore and screaming women running naked into the woods, Heather and Gavin were ready to eat. Their original plan was dinner then the movie, however the film they wanted to see wasn't available later in the night. The New Mutant made sure she didn't eat too much so she could easily get a good meal in. She didn't like barely eating when the guy offered to pay and the fact that Gavin was willing to go out with just her tonight made her more than thankful.
As they walked towards the family diner, Heather was in such a good mood that she sort of forgot about the talk she had earlier with her friends. Gavin was just great to her and even thought he kept raising his eyebrows with anticipation towards the girls in the movie, Heather was able to laugh about it and still enjoy his company. He was a "free bird" and she did everything she could in order to not hold him back. To Heather, she and Gavin had loads in common. They were both artists, down to earth, loyal, free spirited and lovable. But they differed in many ways as well. Problem was, she couldn't see it. In all reality, the two were a cute couple but looks weren't always the key to a relationship (unless you were Bradgelina). The two youths needed to learn a thing or two about each other as well as themselves... whether that was the easy or hard way.
Heather held Gavin's hand, folding her fingers over his. The diner was closer now and she had a warm smile along with a little bounce in her step. The night was going well so far and now she and her date needed to be sated. "I can't believe I didn't get grossed out when that guy got his head sliced by the lawn mower," she commented. "It looked so cheesy." She shook her head and giggled at the imagery. "And the blood was just too bright red. You think the producers could come up with some decent looking corn syrup?" She glanced her ocean blues over to Gavin and couldn't help but look at the jacket. It really looked uncomfortable and she was starting to feel a bit guilty since his wings were being restricted more than they were use to.

"That's cause the special effects in those kid of movies are always cheesy. I mean come on, that one where the guy's guts got spilled? That was so fake," Gavin said with a laugh squeezing her had slightly. He had a lot of fun with Heather no matter what they did, and how could he say no when she asked his so sweetly like that to take her out. In the end, she was still one of his best friends and from the moment they became friends, it became near impossible for him to say no to her. "Admit it, you wanted a scary movie just cause you wanted an excuse to be close to me and for me to comfort you." He smirked at her and pushed her to the side slightly before bringing her close again. "I told you Heather, I'm not that easy. Don't pressure me woman," he shrieked in an exaggerated manner and laughed.
He walked ahead of her when they got to the door and opened it for her, bowing and making a big show out of it. "For you my lady," Gavin said in a proper pompous accent, even managing to keep a straight face through the whole thing before cracking a grin. "See I can be a gentleman." He took her hand again and walked up to the seating hostess. "Hi ma'am, table for two please," Gavin said in a polite voice to the young hostess. She smiled at them and grabbed two menus before leading them to a table. Much to Gavin's delight, it was one of the booths in the corner. He loved the booth tables cause they were way more comfortable.
"Awesome thanks," he said and gave her a charming smile as he and Heather sat down. "Alright, let's see what they got here." Gavin opened the menu and looked at the dishes they served. There were a lot of standard choices, but it was mostly the home cooked American style dishes. "Okay appetizers. Aw man Ian loves the Buffalo Wings here. He took Niki here a couple of weeks back and he wouldn't stop talking about them. I don't know if I want spicy, but I could go for the Pigs in a Blanket and the Fried Calamari. You wanna add anything to that? I already know I want the Oven Roasted 'Dodger' Pot Roast and Noodle Kugel. I just saw it and I'm like oooh yea. Mine!" Gavin said with a big smile on his face. His ex used to bring him Kugel for lunch when he was at practice. He wasn't gonna tell Heather that, but man did he miss Kugel.

All of the food on the menu sounded more than appetizing. And one thing that most guys liked about Heather was that she didn't eat like a cheerleader even though she looked like one. Thankfully her metabolism was very high and since she worked out on a daily basis, she was able to keep it elevated. Eating anything and everything was her treat and she always enjoyed that. It wasn't as if she ate like Ian or Gavin. Even Sky and Lian ate more than she did. Heck she couldn't even come close to the two Paragons. But for a girl, Heather held her own when it came to not eating just a crouton.
Heather giggled seeing Gavin's reaction to the Noogle Kugel. She only had it once before and it was good from what she could remember. It just wasn't her favorite food. "How about the Potato Skins?" she asked as her mouth started to slowly salivate. "I could always enjoy some bacon and cheese and sour cream." It was one of her favorite junk foods and it was always a good way to start a meal. For the entrees, pasta sounded good but she was contemplating on the chicken. Even the salmon dish looked really good. After debating it for several seconds, the water manipulator decided on the salmon.
She placed the menu down and folded her arms on the table. Her jacket was slightly bothering her so she took it off while ruffling her hair a bit. Her curls were still there and she was very glad for that. "How are you doing?" she asked talking about his wings. She nudged her head toward the large red things so he understood what she was talking about. She still felt bad that he couldn't just let them free like he normally did. But that was the problem being in an anti-mutant area. Unfortunately there weren't any places nearby the mansion that would qualify as a decent date. "Thanks again for this," she continued softly. "It really means a lot to me." A bright smile appeared on her face as she reached out for his hand and placed her own on top. "You really are the best."

"Aw shucks Heather, I'm just a simple guy with simple taste trying to make a pretty girl happy," Gavin said in a bashful voice and batted his eyelashes for show. He flipped his hand and squeezed her hand, grinning at her. She really looked damn good tonight, and man was he enjoying it. She was always pretty but tonight she just looked hot, and it really did take Gavin by surprise. "Don't worry about me, I'm having a good time. Besides I've had to deal with keeping 'em in and folded for longer times than this. It's really fine," he assured her with a smile. "Besides how else am I supposed to go out? I'll stretch them out later and all will be good." It would be a lie to say that Gavin wasn't uncomfortable with his wings folded into him and kept down by his heavy leather jacket that used to belong to his dad back in the day. Leather was the only thing that concealed his wings properly, so he tended to stick to those.
The waitress came by then and Gavin smiled that charming smile of his and gave their order to the waitress. "Oh and two Iced teas, right Heather?" He was pretty sure that it was her favorite drink, but she could always change her mind on that. When she left to get their drinks and all, his attention went back on Heather and he smiled softly at her. "Man it's nice to get away from the school though huh? Things have been crazy even since Friday night," Gavin said sitting back in the booth and letting himself relax. He had a feeling that things would only get worse when the weekend was over, but he didn't want to dwell on it now.
"It's like we never get a break from the drama at the school ya know? Kinda glad you told me you wanted to go out tonight, I think I really needed it. I swear the school could be its own soap opera." He laughed a little just as the waitress came by with their drinks. He thanked her and picked up the large iced tea and took a big gulp. "Ah good stuff. How's everything with you though? Your folks and all that stuff." Gavin smiled crookedly at her. "Had me a bit worried."

Heather gladly took a sip of her favorite beverage and smiled since Gavin was so kind to remember. Although her favorite flavor was peach, the lemon was fine for their dinner. Hearing about her parents made her smile soften however, and all she could do was nod while inhaling deeply and then shrug. "Don't be, I'm dealing," she replied. She subconsciously bit her lip, a usual reaction to when she was bothered or stressed out about something, and took another sip of her iced tea. "When I spoke to Dad on Friday he said that mom was already packing and planned on moving out by tomorrow. For now she's staying with my aunt until she can get all of her stuff out." Her voice cracked slightly and she immediately coughed to cover it up. It was tough talking about her parents since it was still so new to her and very unfair. But she realized that it was what was best for them. Still, she had the right to vent and be upset about it. Thing was, Heather didn't like to cry as much as she had been recently. Sure once in a while when watching a sad movie or just laughing so hard that you can't not cry was doable; but when you're worried about your family on a day to day basis, it was hard and honestly... very sickening and annoying.
"It's for the best really," she added. "They aren't fighting anymore and Dad is able to just focus on work... and me I guess." She didn't want to talk about them anymore. But she was thankful for Gavin asking about it and showing that he cared. He was always good at that. "On a lighter note... I don't need to worry about Haven making out with me," she concluded with a light giggle. It was a night for her and Gavin to enjoy each other's company and just have fun, not about the drama that was happening in school on a day to day basis. But Gavin was right, the Xavier Institute was just like a soap opera. All that was needed was crappy climactic music and a student sleeping with a teacher to really make it POP...
She laced her fingers with Gavin's and smiled wide. She didn't want him to worry about her. "I'll be fine," she said. "Thanks for asking." She really didn't see what her friends were continuously saying to her. Gavin seemed to be interested and really committing. He wasn't any different from when Heather first became friends with him and since then they were always close. In this case, more close than before. He was making her happy, and she didn't want to push him into something he didn't want. She needed to ask him if this was what he wanted, but she just couldn't ask him yet. Not the right time, at least not right now, she thought. "So how about you? How's your family and your dog? I know you must miss him terribly." Maybe when the food comes... well not maybe... when the food comes... or just... crap... screw it... We're here to have fun and I'm not going to ruin tonight. We both really needed it. With that, she squeezed Gavin's hand a little tighter just to show him how much he meant to her.

Gavin shrugged slightly as he took another sip of his drink. "Family is doing pretty good s'far as I know. Alex moved in with her boyfriend and my dad is far from happy, but hey I say good for her. Christina and her husband are almost ready to open the restaurant in the city. I'm definitely going to the opening. And Scooby is doing good according to my parents. My mom's a little worried about Abner, he's really getting up there in age. She already said once it comes to the point that he looks like he's suffering, she's gonna put him down. But I think he still got at least a year left in him," he said with a sad smile, shrugging again as he didn't want to think about it.
"But yea all's good really- OH food!" He smiled widely as the waitress came with their appetizers. He dug right into the Fried Calamari, not the best he ever had but still damn good. Same for the Pigs and a Blanket, but he wasn't complaining. Gavin grinned at Heather and pushed the plate towards her. "Try some, they're really good and I didn't realize how hungry I was," he said after he swallowed the food in his mouth.
"Then again, it's not like we don't eat well at the school either. Sky's cooking is oh man, freaking amazing. And yesterday at the cookout that spicy ass dish that Maddy made was amazing even though I think it liquefied my insides. I wonder if Sky made anything today, but it's almost like wishful thinking if I want leftovers. They are animals at the school, ANIMALS I TELL YOU!" Gavin said in a dramatic voice at the end. "It sucks that the weekend is ending, it always seems too short. But I guess it will be cool to have classes again." He shrugged and went back to polishing off the appetizers.

Without hesitation, Heather dug in. The calamari was good and the pigs in a blanket weren't really her thing. But the potato skins, always were a treat. "Mmmm," she hummed while closing her eyes with gratitude that the food gods took pity on them. Her stomach was definitely growling for more and she had no problem obeying. "Here try this." She reached across the table and attempted to feed Gavin a bite, making sure to give him the side with most bacon and cheese (that was her favorite part but there were more for her to enjoy). "Are they amazing or are they amazing?" She giggled at her little joke and then washed her food down with more iced tea.
The New Mutant felt pretty good. The day was nice but long and now it seemed to have been ending pretty well. What better way for her to end the day than with her going out on a date with her guy. Then again, he wasn't exactly hers. Ugh, she thought. The second Gavin mentioned that Maddy girl she could hear Veronika's voice in her head. I don't want to do it, she continued. But she did it anyway. "Yeah I like that we have classes here. It helps us feel a bit normal again you know? Speaking of Maddy, what's she like? I know since Leah joined the team you've been kinda down. Maddy seems to be a colorful character."
It was safe to say, Heather was a bit jealous. Not jealous of Maddy at all, but rather the fact that a girl with more of an edge and rocker lifestyle was on Gavin's team. Did Heather feel threatened? Not exactly, more worried that since Maddy and Gavin were able to bond about music more than she and Gavin were, it might make Heather look less cool. As silly as it was, she was still a teenager in high school. What didn't a teenager worry about besides maybe spelunking? And what was spelunking for that matter?
She placed some more calamari on her side plate along with the sauce that went with it before taking another bite of her potato skin. The food was already starting to fill her up and the entrees didn't even come yet.

"MMmmmm those Potato Skins are gooood. Sky's are better, but hey I'll live," Gavin said with wink at Heather and stole another Potato Skin. He could shovel himself with food and his biology let him eat a bunch and all of it just turned into muscle cause of his mutation and the fact that he had hollow bones. Though he could never beat Ian in an eating contest, he could still keep up for a good couple of rounds. Embarrassed as he was to say, there were times that he even lost to Sky, but that girl was nuts sometimes when it came to food. She must have weighed about ninety pounds but ate her weight in food practically every day.
"Maddy? She's mad cool, she knows a lot of the classical music and she's damn good at Rockband. She definitely makes up for Katana being on the team. I don't know, Acolytes are kinda a mess right now thanks to Frostbite. I got nothing against her except I hate what she did to Ian, he's a really good guy, and how she tore the team apart with her leaving. Whatever though," Gavin shrugged again as he finished the Pigs in a Blanket.
The calamari was pretty much done, and the sauce was damn good. "Man I was really hungry, now I'm good till the Kugel gets here," he said patting his stomach and taking a long sip of the iced tea. "But yea the new people seem pretty cool, although this morning that shit by the pool? Oh man Ana had Dante and that other dude fighting over her, that was a little crazy. Then again, what ain't crazy about this school? With all the weird relationships that happen, things are bound to be crazy tool." Gavin shrugged and stole another Potato Skin before the waitress came by to get the empty plates.

"Can I get a refill please?" Heather asked the waitress before looking at Gavin. "Do you want another one too?" Once the waitress left Heather smiled and nodded. "Yup. A lot of drama... always." They just kept talking about school and how much drama their was. Why? Heather didn't care about that, at least not right now. But then again, talking about their peers did automatically make them start talking about drama. "I'm surprised I still have some room left for more food. The appetizers were pretty big."
Now there was small talk and Heather wasn't really a fan of small talk. At least she believed it was "small talk". Funny enough Gavin brought up relationships and once again Veronika's voice was echoing inside her head; only this time Ana and Kris' voices were in there too. "Gavin can I ask you something?" she said slowly. The waitress came back giving the couple what they ordered and then left. It gave some time for Heather to think about what she wanted to say and how to say it.
With a small smile, her curiosity got the best of her and she continued. "I was just wondering, since we're talking about relationships... how do you think ours is going?" OK so she wasn't exactly telling him everything up front and she probably made the situation awkward for him but she didn't know what he was thinking. Sometimes she wished she was a telepath like Ms. Frost but in the end Heather was fine with her own power. She didn't need to know what everyone was thinking 24/7. That had the potential to really get annoying.
She started working on the salmon, giving her something to do while she waited for Gavin's answer. It really was a pain in the ass how certain people could ruin a good feeling by putting simple thoughts into your head. While some would have called paranoid, Heather's friends called it "being aware".

Gavin looked up from the Kugel that he practically attacked in glee and stared at Heather with a confused face as he chewed the mouthful of food. "Whaddaya mean?" He asked after he swallowed the food. He never got chicks and their subtle kind of talk, and he had a feeling this was one of those times where what he saw as a simple question was probably this whole long psychiatrist explanation of a problem. Gavin got into enough trouble with that kind of stuff with girls, hell he didn't get them and his dad told him more than once he can try for a lifetime but he'd never fully get women.
"I thought everything with us is cool. I mean I'm having fun if that's what you wanna know. So far everything seems cool and I hope you're having a good time too," he said scratching his head after a moment and thinking about her question quite seriously as he ate his food as to what else she could mean. So far Gavin was having a good time with Heather and it was a big plus that she was fun and he didn't mind their makeout sessions in the least bit. Knowing life though, he probably missed something or other down the line.

Heather chewed on her salmon and drank some more iced tea. "Everything is great," she defended. She usually forgot how Gavin needed to be spoon fed certain things. He wasn't stupid but like her, sometimes people needed to be more specific in order for him to understand. "I mean in general. Like how do you feel we are doing... like I'm having fun dating you and I hope you are having fun dating me..." She smiled and ate another piece of salmon, this time eating some rice with it. It was pretty good food but she was too occupied to notice.
"Like I know we said we would try it out and to me, we have. So... do you want to try and take the next step?" She continued to be more specific in case Gavin's face decided to go blank. "Like officially together? Boyfriend/Girlfriend?" She stopped eating at that point and just felt the remainder of her curiosity (Veronika's influence) melt away. She put it out there and unfortunately she felt less confident than when she first told him about her feelings. Maybe because of the different circumstances or other things. It wasn't easy to put a finger on it. But Heather finally said what she needed to say and wanted to say and there was no taking it back now. In all honesty she didn't want to take it back. She deserved to know and now, she would.

Now it was Gavin's turn to be a uncomfortable. He put down his fork and left his food alone for a moment and swallowed hard. "Well uh- I mean... damn," he said with a sigh as he realized how stupid and awkward this was all getting. Things weren't supposed to be awkward with them, she was one of his closest friends and they were always able to be straight with each other. Now though it just seemed way heavier than they originally started out.
"Look Heather, I am having a lotta fun with this dating thing. I mean we always had fun together and other than the making out part, it's pretty much the same as when we were friends, and I'm cool with that, I really am," he began trying to figure out a graceful way to get out of this and not hurt her feelings or get her upset. "Like, okay you're one of my best friends and all, and I like it like that. Honestly, I wasn't kidding when I said I suck at relationships and I don't like them for that reason. The last girl I was in a relationship with was a good friend of mine too, and the whole thing ended really badly and I lost a good friend."
Gavin gave a grim smile at the whole thing, not that he was pining for his ex or totally heartbroken by the breakup, it just sucked that he lost a good friend because of a relationship. "You're one of my close friends, and honestly I don't see a relationship worth losing you as a friend. Yea I know that it was a different girl and it might not be totally fair cause you're a lot different, but trust me when I say I make a really bad boyfriend. Like now how you gotta spell things out for me to get, and I suck at well just being a guy in a relationship. Honestly Heather you don't deserve that I don't wanna be responsible for hurting your feelings because I forgot an important date or because you think I'm playing around too much with another girl or something," he said grabbing her hand and squeezing it.
Truth was he did like her a lot, and he was being really honest with her, but he did see Heather as the type that probably expected more from a guy in a serious relationship than he was willing to give. The last thing he wanted was to lose her friendship because he sucked at being in a relationship.

Heather looked at her hand that was in Gavin's grip. She wondered what would have happened if she was like one of those girls in the movies or T.V. shows where they quickly retracted the hand and then slapped the guy in the face; or broke down into tears right there at the table; or simply stood up and caused a huge scene in the restaurant. All three of those options however, weren't in any way beneficial to Heather's situation. Everything that Gavin said both hurt and made sense at the same time. That was what sucked about it.
With a large sigh, Heather thumbed Gavin's hand and slowly nodded. A curl landed in front of her face and she used her free hand to tuck it back behind her ear. This wasn't the ideal night that she thought of after all and what she hated most was that it seemed that her friends were right. To her that was worse than her parents being right about something. Heather allowed herself to take everything in, just feeling her heart sink down to the pit of her stomach. She wasn't anywhere close to being in love with Gavin but she did love him as her best friend. She was angry, no doubt about that and she squeezed his hand back while trying to not get emotional. Surprisingly she was alright, at least for now.
"That's fair," she replied softly. She didn't want to look up, afraid that seeing his face would make her break down. But after several seconds of avoiding him, Heather looked up at his green eyes and saw how much she meant to him. He really didn't want to loose her as a friend and she wasn't going to let that happen. But she didn't really feel like being on their date anymore and honestly what girl in her position would blame her?
There wasn't anything else she could do or say but smiled as big as she could and sigh deeply again. "We'll always be best friends Gavin," she said. "Don't ever worry about that." It hurt when she said it but she preferred having Gavin in her life than not at all and he told her before that he felt the same way. The waitress came and asked them if they wanted anything else before she gave them the check. Heather shook her head, really wanting the woman to leave them alone. Privacy was needed at that moment and the waitress was starting to bug the New Mutant even though she didn't do anything wrong.

It would be an understatement to say that Gavin felt really bad, but he stood firm on his decision. He knew Heather well enough to know that if they got into a relationship, he'd disappoint her left and right. The last thing he wanted was to be the reason for her hurt and heartbreak, and even though he knew that she was pretty hurt now, it was better than what it could be. Gavin slapped down the $30 for the bill and tip, checking his watch. They still had about an hour till Iceman was supposed to pick them up, so he figured he'd text him in about fifteen minutes or so to have him come grab them.
He opened the door for her and hesitantly took her hand as they walked out of the diner and down the streets, the streetlights lighting up the dark. Gavin squeezed her hand and looked down at her with a grim smile on her face. "I'm sorry Heather," he said softly, feeling really bad cause he knew she was hurt and he was starting to think that the whole dating in the first place was probably not the best choice on his part either. "I know you probably don't wanna do the dating thing anymore, and I get that it's probably for the best." He said that in a voice of acceptance without the strings of disappointment. If Heather wanted something more, than she deserved that and he didn't want her to settle.
"Look I get if you're gonna need a bit of space for awhile, I get that and I respect that. But just know I meant everything I said, and even though I know you're hurt now, it's a small price to pay for the hurt that I could cause if we were to get in a relationship and I'd mess up. It would seriously kill me to know I hurt you cause I really do suck at relationships," Gavin said stopping in front of the street light by the arcade. "Do you get where I'm coming from? Cause you really do mean a lot to me and I don't wanna lose our friendship."

The streetlight was the only illumination nearby besides the arcade and Heather liked that it was quiet and dark out. She didn't really much like noise when she was upset and she was trying really hard not to be bitter. Gavin really did hurt her and even when he took her hand she debated whether to let him or not. But as soon as his warm hand touched hers, she couldn't bring it upon her to be mean or have a short temper with him. That just wasn't the way Heather McCarthy was. Her eyes were a bit watery, but she was alright when it came to the waterworks. She knew that they wouldn't come until later on. In all honestly it didn't exactly hit her completely yet. She knew that her dating Gavin was over and her desire to have him in her life would never change, but the fact that it was actually happening... didn't quite hit her just yet.
All that she could do was to be as mature about it as she could and make him realize that she would still be there for him. "I told you," she replied softly. "You don't need to worry about our friendship. Gavin you're still my best friend." She looked down at her shoes, really upset that they were pretty much wasted. Everything she did for the past six hours was a waste. But then her rationality kicked in and Heather understood that Gavin was really looking out of her, in his own way. She was a bit annoyed with herself in allowing Gavin to mean that much to her. But in what she lacked in a boyfriend she gained in a friend. At the end of the day, friendship was always there no matter what.
Heather sighed deeply (something she seemed to be doing a lot lately) and shook her head slowly. "I have to be honest though," she continued. "You're right. I do need some space. I don't know for how long or anything and I'm sorry I can't just turn off my feelings. I don't want to be mad at you but... I am... Please don't look like that Gavin I'm sorry. I'm not trying to make you feel bad. I need to understand that... that's just how some things go." She didn't hold back in hugging him then and there. It was the closest he would ever get to her from then on. She wanted to kiss him but it just didn't feel right anymore. And as depressing as that sounded, Heather didn't really know what Gavin's boundaries were at the moment so she didn't want to push him into kissing her if he felt awkward.
"We'll always be best friends," she whispered in his ear. "I promise." With that she pulled back, forcing a small smile and really wishing she was home.
