Glaring at the wires attached to the tiny goth, Riker gave a grunt in response and studied them further, trying to figure out how it worked. "Look's like yer a bloody robot. Do these things hurt? I can rip it in two if they hurt ye know, all ye gotta do is tell me," he said with a slight growl to his tone, staring at the machine distrustfully. Cautiously, he hit the power button and narrowed his eyes as the machine as it came to life.
"So basically I jus' ask ye a question an' if ye lie it shows it? That bloody unnatural, I dun need one o' these bloody things te know when someone be lyin' te me. I hear the change in their heart an' how they breath, an' the smell o' 'em when they lie." Riker crossed his arms and continued to glare at the machine. "I'll probably be able te tell ye if yer lyin' before the bloody machine will. Jus' tell me somethin' an' I'll bloody tell ye if yer lyin'," he said with a huff, scrutinizing Kate with a hard look as he got ready to outwit some stupid machine.

Jocelyn stared at Jax with a dumbfounded look on her face all throughout Kitty's lecture. She smacked her face with the palm of her hand and rubbed her temples in frustrations. "Please, for the love of everything, tell me you're not serious?!" she said in a low voice as she attached the wires to him, giving him a look of pure disbelief. "You actually made fun of her weight? Are you retarded?" At that, she smacked him a good one right on the back of his head, making his whole head jerk forward. "You never make fun of a girl's weight. EVER! You don't call her fat, and you don't call her anorexic!" Jocelyn hissed in a low voice looking ahead at Ana to make sure she didn't hear.
"No wonder she said it like that, man you probably got to her good with that weight crap, but that just threw any chance you had with her out the window. Girls aren't going to go for a guy that makes them feel insecure or ugly unless they have daddy issues or something." She pressed the adhesive wires on to his skin just a LITTLE too hard to make her point. "Cardinal rule of chicks man, you never make fun of their hair or their weight. EV-ER!" Joce said and smacked him in the back of his head again just to get it through his thick skull. She turned the machine on and stared at it for a moment before looking back at him.
"Why did I even bother hooking you up? You can manipulate the machine however you want, there's a fool proof method for ya." She rubbed her temples again and sighed. She used to hate it when she was younger that she was short, skinny as a stick and with mosquito bites on her chest. She never had a problem making fun of herself but sometimes depending how it was said it would make her just a tiny bit insecure. Just a smidgen though, since she rarely took what others said to heart all that much. "Did it really not occur to you for a second that she might actually take it seriously? That it would hurt her just a LITTLE bit?" Jocelyn hissed, looking at the machine with slight interesting to see the patterns he made with the heart monitor lines. It reminded her of an etch-a-sketch on how straight lines bent to make a picture.

"Kevinnn," she dragged his name out in a disappointed sounding way "would'ja focus kid." For all the hope she had put in having a good lab-partner was lost as she saw him staring around the room. Sure there was a lot of new guys and she knew he was all about looking them all over and up-n-down. "Look I want to do this, so roll up your sleeves so I can hook you up. I'm good at this stuff, just ask Fleet." She winked and grinned at him.
She didn't have to admit to anything, and she never would, but Kevin knew Niki well enough so she was pretty sure he got the joke. "Ok this one here, this one here and the heart monitor.. lets go, lose the buttons Mr. Snappy dresser. What's the deal with you? You iron your clothes for fun or somethin?" She rolled her eyes a little as she put the last one on him and nodded her head when she double checked against Kitty's diagram.
"Looks right, so now we get a base line I think. I'll ask you some easy yes or no stuff and that'll show your response to truths and also to lies." She flipped the power on and the small device made a high pitched tone. "Ew- hold on a sec." She picked it up and smacked it a little until the sound stopped. "That's better. Alright.." and as she began the battery of baseline questions the readout showed his response. "Now," she figured she would throw him a curve and see what his response might be "do you regret all the time you wasted with Lorelai?"

Ricki's skin was still burning up at the places where Gavin had touched her. She normally wasn't as aware of the affect he had on her, but since her epiphany last night and his latest comment on her mad passionate love for winged guys she was left a lot more... aware. She could feel her heart thumping a little faster than usual against her chest. She rolled her eyes at herself, trying to ignore the slight squirmy feeling she was getting. "If I lie to that question, you'll never let me have another peaceful moment." she stated sticking her tongue out at him. It wasn't that Ricki had anything against little Kevin but she'd never really been all that close to him either and plus he seemed a lot closer to Heather's group.
Thinking of Heather, her eyes automatically shifted in the New Mutant's direction, and the slight sullen look on her face actually did hurt Ricki, because for one, she knew it'd hurt Gavin so much to see Heather like this, and secondly, Ricki just hated to see anyone hurt. May it be her best friend or a complete stranger she was passing by a Post Office. Ricki sighed, returning her attention back to Gavin. He knew if she simply said the words 'I am madly in love with Hardlight' Gavin wouldn't let her forget that for the rest of eternity. "So, we'll let you think of another genius question I can try lying to. Meanwhile, no. I am not madly in love with Hardlight." she declared with a rather smug look on her face. Her eyes dropped on the screen in order to watch her answer be re-confirmed, but instead the result that came on the screen surprised her.
According to the lie detector... Ricki'd just lied. "Wait... WHAT?!" she yelled out loud, jumping off the desk turning a bright shade of pink. That wasn't quite right... but now that she thought about it, she felt her heart almost thumping by her chest and she did remember being told by Doctors that due to the fact that she was constantly so hyper her blood pressure was always a little higher than an average person. "No. No no no no no! No, this thing doesn't work right!" she squeaked, almost jumping in her seat. "I love love love Hardlight!" she exclaimed, that being the first thing coming to her head.
The machine again declared her words a lie. "SEE! These things don't work right on me! I'm just abnormal!" she squeaked, words leaving her mouth to defend herself before she could even think about what she was saying. She pulled the wires off her pulse points almost immediately and literally stabbed them onto Gavin's pulse points. "So Birdboy, let's pop this joke on you!" she exclaimed poking his shoulder hard with her eyes narrowing at him. "Are YOU in love with Hardlight? Huuuuuuh?" She tried to hold her straight face, but she couldn't help but allow the slightest trace of a smile flash on her face while she was still burning pink.

"OW! Holy Jesus Joce. That one actually hurt!" Jax growled rubbing the back of his head his eyes fallin' to his knees. OK, so giving him the Joce-glare and yelling at him would have sufficed. The wack on the back of his head made his head feel a little fuzzy though. How the hell was he supposed to know that girls were sensitive over stupid things like hair and weight? Plus he was joking for Christ sakes. In all honesty, he had no freaking clue that Ana was in the slightest bit hurt by him teasing her about her weight.
He turned his head to look over at her quite abruptly before he looked back at Joce with a scowl on his face. He replayed her expression when she'd read his text and back at the pool and cafeteria when they'd last spoken. Okay, so now that he thought back it did seem like she was a little pissed off... but who the hell could blame him man? One of these chicks had to write him a manual to how a woman's mind worked and things you are and aren't allowed to say to a chick without being pushed into a damned swimming pool or being knocked off the table via the use of telekinesis.
"And if it helps my case, I am not screwing with the machine right now and here we go... I did not know for even a micro-second that whatever the hell I said as a freaking joke would hurt Rexy there or hurt her that much in the slightest. I did actually apologize to her about the first one, and I didn't even bring up her weight today!" he hissed staring Joce straight in the eye, no really having to look at the Lie Detector to know that what he'd said was the truth. Jax would never admit it to anyone, but he was actually a little pissed off with himself at the fact that he'd upset Ana so much. He shot her a sneaky side along glance before sighing. "I'll apologize to her after class okay?" he asked raising an eyebrow, not really wanting to be beaten up right now by Ana and Joce in front of the majority of his team.
Jax would never ever raise a hand on a girl, so he'd actually take whatever they threw at him without a word.

"Yes" The word just dropped off his tongue. "Uh I mean uh, damn. That wasn't fair!" He snapped at Niki. "Look just because she is rough to get along with and she made things hard for me in Limbo and almost got me killed and all the stuff that went down once we got back and how I tried my best to be her friend and it didn't even matter to her anyway doesn't mean I don't care about her." His rambling sentence got louder and louder as he went along and the words smushed into each other as he said them faster and faster and at the end of it all the machine beeped it's little tone that said it was all true, at least according to Kevin.
He believed all of what he had said. It was a startling thing for him to look back and see how he actually felt and even the bit about LIMBO where he had wanted so much to think she was doing her best to help out but she really was only out to save her own skin. "But I guess after alls said and done the time I spent with her was wasted because she's not somebody who I would call worth it now. I don't even know who she is anymore. Hey I wonder if she didn't get possessed by a demon or something." Again the machine beeped it's affirmative tone. Kevin was not lying as he told his feelings. "You think?"

Pursing her lips, she shook her head at him ever so slightly. "I think we been over all this so many times. I'm just glad you finally see that what we all been sayin to you isn't just a pile of mierda. According to this it looks like you really do believe it." A smug smirk grew there on her features as she got confirmation that Kevin had just been being stubborn and holding onto a hope he had, but he had finally given up on it.
"Ok so, look the object of this is to make it so you can beat it. Were you payin attention or just enjoyin the view?" She nudged her head over her shoulder at the two new boys sitting and eying Ana and Heather. "I'm thinkin the easiest thing for you would be pain. So why don't you figure that out and I'll give you a second while I come up with a question that has nothing to do with anything worthless, deal?" She smiled and gave him a minute before asking "Are you six feet tall?"

"I like to see you try it." He'd grinned laughing as he sat down. It was an awful feeling he had knowing he had betrayed his friend and even though he didn't do it with such intent to, he had done it anyway and that made him feel stupid as well as guilty. "I will be the guinea pig, yes?" he said as he readied himself and let Leah do the machine.
If there was any truth to anything he said he might be hard pressed to know for sure. His ploy at defeating the machine would be in the fact that he had little past, nothing really to go on, and it might just be enough to fool the detector. "I am all good?" he asked when he didn't know if she had finished. He had let his mind wander to his blankness, his missing memory, and he had been deep in thought so he could not tell if she had even started yet, but he was ready.
"I am prepared for the questions whenever you are, so let me know. I am actually curious myself as to what I might answer." He smiled and then realizing this was far more serious than a laughing matter he wiped the grin from his face. "I am ready now." He said more gruffly after clearing his throat and trying to remember through the blankness to even one of his yesterdays before coming to the school.

"It nice to see that you not lose your touch with boys. And look at it like this, now when we go out together we have twice as much fun picking up boys again," Ana said with a giggle. She really had no use for technology, but she was having fun with this exercise. Already being hooked up to the machine, Ana had very subtly used her telekinesis to make the knobs turn so pretty much the machine kept restarting itself and making her test results inconclusive. This probably wasn't what Kitty had in mind about a method, but it was sure a lot of fun to do. The look on Heather's face when she asked her questions was just priceless.
"It seems telekinesis be useful in lesson." Ana smirked and began reattaching the wires from herself to give Heather a try. Carefully, she helped her friend place them in the right place and smiled at her, really wanting to distract her and get her back to the Heather that she knew and loved. Ana couldn't help but feel bad, she knew that Heather had been there for her when she was getting back to being healthy after she was fearfully thin at 5'10 and 105lbs, with barely any nutrients in her body. Now that she gained twenty pounds, she was still technically underweight but with her small frame it suited her and now she was eating and taking vitamins regularly, with a clean bill of health from Dr. McCoy, though he insisted she receive a blood test once a month. Like Heather had been there for her, she wanted to be there for her friend.
"Alright we start yes? Do you think Romon and strong silent friend of his are cute?" Ana asked with a giggle, saying it just loud enough for the boys at the next table to hear and for Heather to get that adorably embarrassed look on her face. She didn't think Heather's power could be used to manipulate the machine, so it would be interesting to see if she could manage it, though with the luck others were having it may not be that easy.

In any normal situation Heather would have blushed as red as a red gummy bear. However, this was not a normal situation and Heather wasn't her usual cheerfull or positive self. She was in a bummed out mood, but she was more than appreciative on how Ana was really trying to get her back to normal as quickly as possible. Heather knew she was going to need some time to get over Gavin and just be friends. It was sort of interesting how he was able to carry on like his usual self as he and Ricki were working on their own strategy to "beat the box". She ignored it however, and focused her attention on her best friend.
Smacking her hand against her head, Heather scoffed leaving a smile on her face and shook her head. Of course she would ask something like that, she thought before looking over to the two boys she had introduced herself to. Thanks to Ms. Frost, she was able to point out who Johnny Rawlings was in the crowd. In order to not make it obvious, the Headmistress was kind enough to show Heather an image within her mind. The only reason Heather didn't realize Johnny was in her class, was because she was focused on her gloomy self. But she was happy to finally meet the student she was going to spend quite a bit of time with. She wanted to give him his space, hence why she didn't just say she was going to be his tutor. After class she was going to pull him aside and reveal herself since he seemed like the shy type although she could have been wrong.
Rolling her eyes, Heather looked back at Ana and said "No." She stuck to "yes" or "no" answers since that's what was usually best when taking a polygraph. The machine revealed her to be telling the truth, considering she didn't find them cute at all. To Heather, Romon and Johnny were boys that would fit under her "Hot" category. However Johnny was more handsome than hot, at least in her eyes. Romon had the whole accent going for him and the dreads were fitting.
Heather smirked at Ana, content with herself that she was able to somewhat manipulate the question and make her answer still come out truthful. When watching movies or in articles she had previously read, Heather saw that polygraph tests were usually only 86% accurate. That meant that it wasn't exactly such a reliable machine when dealing with professionals. Of course, most people who were generally unable to control their blood pressure, breathing, etc., it was quite simple to be able to tell if they were lying or not. In reality, Heather didn't really approve of the Lie Detector. Mainly because of how inaccurate it was.
The girls continued with their questions, having their fun and games. Heather was feeling much better, and was even able to giggle a bit thanks to Ana continuing to ask more embarrassing questions. It was a start, but Heather McCarthy actually started to feel some slight hope that everything was going to be OK.

"Hi" Penny said to Ivy. After Ricki's frantic introduction she was at a loss for more words. She was also trying to listen to Shadowkat, and was not liking this lesson at all. Mutants especially are forced to take lie detector tests., she repeated the teacher's words in her mind. Penny had never seen a polygraph before but she knew about them. Her father had been a clerk in a government ministry in Pyongyang. The job got them an apartment in a crumbling old block built by the Soviets and usually, but not always, enough to eat, which was a feat even in the capital city. It also meant he had to take a polygraph. The last time he'd come home ashen faced. Somehow it had been OK that time. But sooner or later something had tipped off the authorities and they'd been raided. The thought of having to take these things made her uneasy even though she didn't expect armed men were going to come take her in the night if she failed. That wouldn't happen in America.
Penny picked the little machine off the desk and looked at it closely. "Do you want to go first?" she asked Ivy in her crisp, formal English. She looked over at K'8 and Riker to see how they were doing and if they'd figured out how to put the things on properly. "I'm Penny." she said and smiled. "I know Ricki said that already, but hi. I'm new here. I just moved from Minnesota. Where are you from?" Do you miss it as much as I miss home? She had only been at Xavier's for a few days but it felt like months, and Penny greatly missed her sister and her friends in Minnesota. It had taken forever for it to feel like home, and she wondered how long it would take her to get comfortable here. "How long have you been going here?"

"Yes you caught me, this is actually a disguise I have on right now. Really I'm Vana White with a love for little blond guys," Gavin said with a straight face before he burst out laughing. "BAAAAaahHAHAhahahHAHAHHAHA!" Tears began forming in his eyes, partially from the absurdity of that statement and the other part from the look on Ricki's face. He laughed so hard that he was half laying on Ricki, holding his stomach and starting to hiccup. "Oh man, we're so going to fail this thing," he said in between laughs as his head lolled on her shoulder.
This project was making Gavin feel much better, and Ricki was taking his mind off the fact that he probably lost a friend with Heather, and hell he was just getting in a better mood. He liked hanging out with her and he knew from the past that whatever life threw at him, he'd take it in stride. It was just a relief that he didn't really have to think all that much about it since, well what could he do really. He was upfront with Heather from the start, told her he didn't like relationships and he just wasn't good at them. Gavin did find it kind of weird that she was mad at him despite that, but he knew that chicks could be weird about stuff like that.
Maybe that's why he liked hanging with chicks like Maddy and Ricki, cause they never got weird about stuff and they dished right back whatever he threw at them. While wiping the tears from his eyes and admitting defeat to finding a method, he had his fun by poking Ricki and babbling things that were all pretty much lies just to hear the machine beep to annoy her.

As much as he wanted to pay attention, Romon was finding it more and more difficult as his eyes kept wandering between Ana and Heather and then of course Jocelyn who sat right behind them. He found that Gavin was indeed telling the truth when he said that the girls in the school were extremely pretty. It was a feast for the eyes just to be sitting in the classroom, and it made it all that much of a struggle for Romon to concentrate on his work.
Still, he managed to ask Johnny the basic questions that were on the board with some basic things like his name and age and where he lived. They didn't get very far in the project, but it was more Romon's fault as he found himself distracted easily in the new surroundings and could not find it in him to concentrate on answering Johnny's questions when he was asked. Perhaps that's why the results of his test were inconclusive, because his concentration was anywhere but the questions. "That could have gone better," Romon said looking back at the results of their tests with a laugh, shaking his head at the test. "I am sorry, but it seems my lack of concentration did help us in this case."

The class went by rather smoothly without incident, which was refreshing since it was a rare class where there was no crazy argument or some fight in the making. Actually, Kitty's class had never been too bad, which could be attributed to the fact that none of the Hellions attended her class, Rumble in particular. It seemed that trouble was notorious wherever that guy went, no matter who was there, and she was very glad that it was something she didn't have to deal with in her class at least.
For the most part, her little assignment engaged most of the class. Kitty liked to see the students having fun and trying out different methods. She had been going around and looking in to see how they were doing, answering any questions they had about any of the goings on of the project. Like anything fun though, class was over before anyone knew it. A piercing whistle from Kitty cut off the chatter in the background and had them all quiet to pay attention to her. "Well guys, I hate to say it but class time is up. Next week we're gonna see the methods some of you came up with to make the results inconclusive at the beginning of class. I also want a one page paper from all of you on the your experience with the lie detector and any observations you made, be it with the experience in general and then the challenge of finding a method. Now get outta my class!" She tried to say the last part in a stern voice but ended up laughing as the students began filing out.
However, there were a few students that Kitty had to detain, since she was still a teacher and had to do her job, even if it meant pointing out the flaws of students. She waited until only Sketch, Hoax, Onyx, Nightshade, and Katana were left in the class. "Alright guys, I'm guessing that you all know why I asked you to stay back right?" She raised her eyebrow at each of them in turn and let out a long sigh. "Look, I'm definitely not the toughest teacher that you guys are gonna have, but I find it very disrespectful when I ask you guys to do something and I see no efforts on any of your parts. I don't give much homework, I make any tests and papers as easy as possible cause I know life in this school can catch up with you and the last thing you need to worry about is turning in an assignment on time. I accept all late assignments, but when you're in my class, I expect to see you doing work."
Kitty pushed a strand of hair behind her ear and looked at the group with a disappointed look on her face. "Sketch, Hoax, I understand you guys are new and it's stressful adjusting to a new setting, especially being in a mutant school, so I'm going to let you guys slide just this once on doing no work and putting no effort in class. Next time, there is going to be consequences though, so I suggest you don't make a habit of it. I still expect an assignment from both of you, so take this as an opportunity to get to know your classmates as you will surely need their help to complete the assignment," she said looking at both the newcomers before dismissing them and turning back to the group in front of her.
"Well guys what can I say. Jasper as much as I adore you I can't have you half asleep through class. I understand that your partner wasn't exactly helpful, but this is where you as the Beta step in and take charge. If I were you, I'd look for Heather or K'8 today and ask them for some help on the homework." Kitty gave him a half smile and sent him off, though a part of her felt sympathy for him since she knew he had a lot on his mind lately and the dark circles under his eyes were a clear indication.
"Ivy, I'm surprised that you're one of the people that I have to talk to today. I guess there is a first time for everything then right? I understand if sometimes things can get a little hard for you when it comes to being in contact with people, but don't let this happen again. If Rogue can get through it, than so can you. I really hope that we don't have a repeat of this situation and you don't let it happen in your other classes." To say she was disappointed in Ivy was an understatement, as the girl known to do all her work did nothing in her class today and had Kitty wondering just how well she knew this girl.
She pointed to the door and waited for Ivy to leave before turning to Katana. "Look, I know you're trying to change, and I'm proud of you for it, but as much as you seemed eager for trying to change, having Alex do all the work today was really not fair to him. Oh yes missy, I did in fact notice that he was the one coming up with the questions and theories and you barely gave your two cents in. Though I was glad to even see you in class today, you still got to work on your class participation. So you start doing that and making up the homework you missed, and we'll be square. Got it?" Kitty smiled at her encouragingly. "Good, now if you'd be so kind to help me clean up a bit here, than we'll call it even for the day!"
