Ivy walked into the rec room with her bag hanging over her shoulder. Believe it or not, she had actually brought work with her to do after deciding she wanted to watch tv at the same time. She could pull it off, of course, by being able to work on her assignments and be able to follow whatever she was watching as well. She had missed the rec room, all the accoutrements inside it, the atmosphere it normally held and the fun that was had in it.
Walking in further, she slid her bag off her shoulder and tossed it over the back of the couch before walking around it and letting herself plop down onto it with a sigh. She grabbed the remote from the coffee table in front of her and switched the tv on, flipping through the channels until she saw something she wouldn't mind watching. She saw Elizabeth: the Golden Age was on one of the movie channels the school got and tuned into that. She knew it wasn't completely historically correct, but despite that she still liked the movie. Lucky for her she was catching it near the beginning, so there was a good deal to watch while she did her work.
Ivy put the remote down next to her bag and propped her feet up on the coffee table. She reached into her bag to dig out her books and her notebook where she did all her assignments. It was a thing she did that she liked and thought worked, where she did all the assignments in one place, and because she would most likely have to hand them in, it didn't matter where she had done it and she would know where they all are. Taking her pen out of her pocket, she watched the part where Elizabeth was sitting on her throne and was being presented the plunders of the New World by Walter Raleigh as she opened up one of her school books to begin her work.

Turning down the music blasting through her headphones, Katana peeked through the door into the rec room, and was actually somewhat relieved to see somebody there. She had been studying in her room alone and it just had not been working. She needed background noise and background people, and with the Paragons away at their training, at least that is what she thought she'd heard, she didn't even have to worry about the brat pack of Chase, Sky, and Lian.
Hmm. Looks like Ivy. Don't really know her that well which is good, means she might not hate me yet. Katana thought only half bitterly. She's an Acolyte, I think. And with that thought Katana started to turn from the door. Perhaps, I better not try to hang. Might look all clingy and such, like I'm tracking down the Acolytes for some pathetic, 'oh accept me' campaign. Better to prove it in practice. Her old cynicism and defense mechanisms were kicking in to give her a pretty nasty flight response. But she conquered it. Look, you gotta at least try to play nice. Just ask if you can sit down, you don't have to talk...she's watching her show so she won't want talk anyway. Besides, this was an opportunity to maybe start to get off on the right foot with one of the Acolytes, and she needed it. Other than Haven, she'd not had much luck with them so far, although it had been barely two seconds in the grand scheme of things, so it was way too soon to judge.
Walking into the room, Katana slowly walked up to the coach, trying too obviously to be nonchalant. "Hey, mind if I sit down," she said to Ivy, "I thought I'd actually do some homework for once," Katana continued, holding up her French book as she noticed the other girl had her books out as well. In addition to the normal homework, Katana had a terrible amount of catching up to do in French, both make up work, and the fact that she hadn't learned half the vocabulary and grammar needed to do the current assignments.

Ivy was scribbling down answers to homework questions in her notebook and listening to the movie on tv when she heard someone come in. Instantly she looked up and turned her head around to see Katana slowly approaching and looking rather awkward. "Um, sure," Ivy replied to her, putting on a nice smile to be friendly. She did think Katana was a bit on the odd side, and extremely awkward in dealing with people, to Ivy it seemed, even moreso than she herself. With Ivy, she was pleasant when first talking to someone until she got comfortable enough to relax around them, and then it normally went from there. It, for pretty much the most part, was what happened with the rest of the Acolytes. She liked them and felt she could be relaxed around them. Katana was still new, and Ivy had to see how she would hit it off with her and form more of a thorough opinion.
Pointing to a spot over on the couch she sat on, she looked up at Katana, still with the pleasant smile. "Have a seat if you want, I'm just doing some homework and watching this movie," she explained before finishing off the paragraph she was writing for one of her history questions. Once she finished writing, she looked up at the tv to actually watch a bit of the movie for a few minutes. She glanced at Katana out of the corner of her eye and thought of something she might say to attempt striking up a conversation. "So...French? How's that going?" she asked, slowly looking from the tv to Katana.

Ricki'd had a fairly entertaining Lunch, hence she was in quite a happy mood as she went to take a quick shower and slip into some fresh clothes. It was only as she made her way to the rec room did she realize that Gavin was missing at Lunch, and then when she thought about it more she couldn't recollect seeing Ian or Haven either and concluded that they were probably hanging out in the rec room, or perhaps had stepped out. When Ricki reached the rec room, she'd concluded on it being the latter thought.
"Ivyy!" Ricki grinned at her friend, half skipping into the room to head closer towards her friend, before she spotted some more company. "Uh- Hey Katana." Ricki smiled at the new acolyte, before she leaned over to give Ivy a quick hug, and then sat herself on the floor, leaning against the arm-rest of the sofa. She looked from Ivy to Katana, feeling a bit awkward. She wanted to catch up with Ivy, ask her where she'd been, what had been going on - but she figured that Ivy wouldn't want to speak about it in front of... others. Ricki sighed, before she looked at the two girls again.
She skimmed over Ivy's work, and her eyes vaguely dropped on Katana's. "You both doing homework? Oh! I started mine... it's half done, I should've got it along! Aw well.. I'll do it tomorrow." she shrugged, exchanging a look with Ivy before turning to look at the TV. "Oh! This is that Queen Elizabeth movie isn't it? My cousin, Jess loves it." Ricki shuddered as she remember her cousin watching that movie literally every other night whenever Ricki went to visit England. It was kinda creepy. "Hey- Ivy, where were you at Lunch? Can't remember seeing you..." Honestly, Ricki couldn't remember anyone else except the people she was sat with, and that made her feel a bit guilty. "... you too, uh- Leah." Ricki hurried to add. "D'you prefer Leah or Katana?" she added, It's kinda sad how people don't like her... being nice couldn't hurt.. could it?

Relieved at the other Acolyte's friendly smile, Katana stood for a moment in front of the couch hesitating about sitting where Ivy was gesturing. She hadn't expected the girl to be this friendly and mixed with the relief was a hint of confusion. But Ivy continued and said to have a seat if she wanted, so she sat with a quick, "Thanks."
Opening the French book wide she looked down at it and shook her head slightly at the long line of incomprehensible words, before starting to flip back through large numbers of pages. Somewhere near the front would be a chapter she had actually learned and she would have to start from there. Don't make such a f'ing racket with the pages. You'll disturb her movie, Katana thought to herself. Cool looking movie. Better not get too involved or I'll never learn this French. Oh, good there's something that looks familiar. Let's see le passe simple. Oh, God, that was two months ago!. Almost perfectly on cue, Ivy asked Katana how her French was going.
"Not so hot. I kinda didn't study for two months so I'm just a wee bit behind." As soon as she made the admission Katana wished she had lied. The girl was being friendly and that could only mean she didn't really believe what she'd been hearing about her. After all who could not hear about me being here. I've been a f'ing train wreck. "So,yeah, the bad reps all true so now I gotta unearn it. Karma's really nice though and she's givin' me a shot. But yeah, that's enough about me. How's the - uh - history?" Katana said as she looked back over at the girl's books.
Just then Taffy came skipping into the room calling for Ivy and giving the girl a hug. Perfect timing, just perfect. Katana thought kind of grumpily before thinking better of it. Well she's kinda nice I guess, don't really know her either, so more the merrier right. But Katana got the impression Taffy didn't feel too great about there being a crowd, or specifically about Katana being there. Because while she gave Katana a nice smile she also looked back at the couch from her seat on the floor to Ivy and Katana, then Katana to Ivy before making an audible sigh.
Katana looked quickly back to her French book, took a pen out of her pocket, and pulled a ratty old notebook out of her bag. As she opened the notebook to start copying verbs she heard Taffy finish talking about the movie and her cousin Jess and ask Ivy about where she was at lunch, before hurriedly adding Katana to the question. Yeah, I'm the third wheel here now, she thought. Maybe I should go. She was about to get up and tell the two girls she'd catch them later and leave them alone to talk, when Taffy asked her what she preferred to be called. The question made her think maybe she'd been too quick to jump to conclusions. You always do that, she admonished herself, assume the worst and act like it. You don't know what's in her head.
"My friends call me Leah," she said.

"I was in my room at lunch, finishing off a book I started the other day. It was really good and I'd been dying to finish it before I started on more homework. Why, did I miss anything interesting?" Ivy asked Ricki with a laugh, figuring she did since lunch period was always a time where something was happening, whether it was good or bad, or just plain messy. She knew she should've gone to just watch the show of the day, but if she did she wouldn't have been able to finish her book. She laughed again and picked up the remote. "Want me to change the channel if this creeps you out? This was the only thing on and I love it, but not as much as Jess," she said with a giggle, offering the remote to Ricki if she wanted it.
Discreetly, as she held out the remote she put her legs up under her so that Ricki couldn't accidentally touch them, even though they were clothed with her jeans. She had been unable to help stiffening up at the quick hug, and was glad that she was sort of isolated, as Katana had taken a seat not quite next to her. Ivy remembered that she had answered her before Ricki came, and put on the small kind smile again. "My history is going, almost done actually. Do you want any help?...I'm not bad at French," she offered to be nice, feeling her thoughts of Katana being odd only strengthened by the way she spoke and seemed to cut herself off.
Offering help was Ivy's attempt to make a friend, but things felt more awkward than when she didn't do something and she sort of thought she shouldn't have said anything. She was being nice still; she had no reason to be mean, and she wouldn't be, just she might still not as open as she would be as if it were just Ricki in the room with her. If Katana did want the help, Ivy would try to help her finish her work, and Ivy only hoped that she at least had some grasp of the language. She might not, not if she was spacing out for the past two months, but she hoped it wouldn't consume enough time for some quality time with Ricki maybe and her movie pass by, forgotten. Waiting for Katana to answer, she looked to Ricki for a moment with a real smile and poked her with the remote. "You should've brought your homework too. We could've all gotten it done right now," she laughed and poked her gently again.

"Hey! No poking!" Ricki giggled, "I know I know, but I'm just too lazy to go all the way to my room and get it- unless you want to do the honors?" Ricki shook her head at Ivy, before looking down at the remote Ivy'd offered her, "It's okay, I'll just ignore the movie." she grinned, "And, oh my god, dinner was crazy. Sky's little brother Austin, he was kicking Lian's butt, it was quite amusing to watch, and there was the usual messing about going on at the table." Ricki shrugged, continuing to smile before she looked over at Katana. Her statement made Ricki think for a moment before she answered. Her friends called her Leah... and well, they were on the same team now, even though Ricki didn't quite think of Katana as a friend yet, if the team wanted to make this work- they had to try, right?
"Well, I'll call you Leah then?" Ricki asked with a bit of an awkward expression, "I mean, we're team-mates, right?" she paused, wondering if she should elaborate or not. May as well get it cleared up, "We don't know each other well enough to be friends but i'm sure we can try." Ricki looked up at Ivy, catching her eye for a moment, before looking away. I don't see how this can end badly, I mean, if we need her to be a part of the team, we'll have to try to gain her trust, 'cause otherwise it'll just be the paragons sceanario over again with her... yeah, there's no harm in trying to be friends. "Uh, not bad? Leah- Ivy's like amazing at French. She's amazing at everything! She's my dork-buddy." Ricki stuck her tongue out at Ivy, rolling her eyes.
"I'm okay at French too, i'll try to help too- if you want." Ricki added, exchanging another look with Ivy, Acolyte girls bonding time. How adorable. Ricki internally laughed at the thought, before turning a bit to get a clearer look at Katana Leah and Ivy both.

That was a little too gutsy. Leah thought of her last remark. Should of just said 'Leah is fine' or something like that. As Ivy answered Ricki's question, Leah started carefully copying out the list of verbs that took etre instead of aller in the passe compose. I at least remember how to conjugate those two so get 'em matched with the right verbs and I'm off to the races, she thought.
She only had gotten a couple copied when she heard Ivy addressing her question about history, and surprisingly offering to help with the French. Leah hesitated for a moment. Wow, I hadn't expected that at all. That's really nice. But I'm so behind it would probably just frustrate her and all, plus she's got her movie and her friend. Maybe I can ask her if I can meet up with her later at a better time for her and when I've gotten a little more caught up. And so Leah sat there is a contemplative and yet somewhat surprised look on her face, while Ivy, hopefully still waiting for an answer, told Ricki she should of brought her homework too.
She was about to answer when Ricki blurted out to Ivy to stop poking, and started talking about all the craziness at dinner with the little boy and Lian. Having been lectured at lunch about missing meals, Leah had been there. But she'd wanted to avoid the world and had just quickly hit the buffet and then found a nice out of the way table, hidden in a back corner. The whole thing had been rather amusing, if she was willing to admit it to herself. Anyway, soon Ricki had finished the story, and Leah had still not answered Ivy. Then Ricki too was offering help with the French. This is amazing. Maybe this team switch is the best thing. Gotta not screw this up.
"Thanks, both of you. I appreciate the chance, really, and hope," she said turning now to face Ricki and then to face Ivy, "to earn the chance to be your friend." She paused briefly then continued. "If you've got the time Sunday maybe I could take you up on the help, and of course if you want me to do anything for you just ask, but right now I'm so far behind I need to study first before I'm ready for it...plus, you'll miss your movie...or" she said remembering Ivy handing Ricki the remote, "whatever else is on."

Ivy laughed and rolled her eyes at Ricki. "I'm not a dork, I'm just abnormally smart. It's not like I can help it," she laughed and poked her with the remote again, shaking her head. "I can't believe I missed that, a little boy taking out Ripple? That had to be hilarious," she said, smiling. Had she been there she probably would've just watched quietly and maybe giggled to herself, but hearing it sounded just as good and left plenty to the imagination, especially thinking about what might've happened with a little boy taking on a Paragon.
She was drawn out of her thoughts by hearing how Katana hoped to earn the chance to be their friend. After glancing at Ricki with a slightly raised eyebrow, she looked to Katana and let her face relax, putting on another small smile. "Alright then," she answered, keeping her face from going anywhere less than a smile. She's kinda weird...I would just let it flow and not seem like she's desperate from friends...Okay, I know she probably doesn't have very many, but it's kinda putting me off that she's being all extra formal about just making a friend or two. I would just go with what's going on and hope for the best, but..I don't know, she thought, mentally making the slightly weirded out face she'd rather make than the one she displayed.
"And sure, Sunday if you want. I don't think I have anything to do on that day, but the sooner you get your assignment done, the clearer your conscience is. Take it from me..my conscience is always clear. Like crystal clear. We can do it now if you want too...the movie's long enough and besides, Ricki can change it to something else when it finishes," she offered, sort of insisting to do it now rather than later. Most of the time, Ivy preferred to do things sooner rather than later, so that they were done, and so that play could come since work was done. She also preferred doing things she didn't like as much first before the things she did like, like math work before her other classwork. She was good at math, but it wasn't her favorite class and so she'd get the homework out of the way first and foremost. Helping Katana was something she wasn't quite sure she wanted to do, but she offered out of politeness and she wouldn't back out of it, but the sooner it was done, the sooner she figured she'd feel a little better.
Ivy looked away from Katana to the tv for a moment to turn away the thoughts she felt were mean, and watched as Walter Raleigh dazzle Elizabeth with stories of his travels. She let out a laugh as she knew what would happen at some point in the movie, like the part when Elizabeth finds out Raleigh was with Bess. Biting her lip a little as she watched the two on the screen, she looked away again at Ricki and stuck her tongue out at her playfully because she wanted to.

Ricki rolled her eyes at Ivy and giggled, I missed her. It's nice to have a girl around who I can talk to... who's my own age. Her eyes moved over to the TV, and she stared at the current scene for a second or so before she looked back at the two Acolytes. "Sunday... yea, I guess I can do Sunday, though I was hoping to get some guitar stuff done then, so i'll just make sure homework and guitar doesn't clash." Ricki shrugged, starting to hum quietly under her breath. Leah's not too bad... I guess. She's trying really hard, I'd be dumb not to see that, but well- at least she's making an effort too. She's being quite formal- i'm so reminded of Stace, when she was preparing for her interview at Oxford University.
"Uh- Leah, you know you don't have to be this formal or anything," Ricki pointed out, May as well point it out, "I mean like- if that's just how you usually speak that's fine, but like- we won't eat you if you just speak like... normally" Ricki smiled, tucking her hair behind her ear and stretching her legs out in front of her. Ricki stared at the TV screen for a moment before she looked over at Ivy, She really does like these kind of movies- god, I fall asleep. But eh, that's just Ivy I guess. Ricki smiled at the thought, before she looked away, to stare at the floor.
"So, feel good to be back around school? I'm sure you missed all the assignments and stuff so much!" Ricki shook her head, her voice sounding as if she meant every word, and her face holding a very important look, "I mean, no work?! it must have been, so so soooo miserable for you!" Ricki held her serious face for a second or so more, before she just couldn't resist it. She shook her head, bursting into a fit of giggles, burrying her face in her hand. She looked up, and turned her head around to giggle at her best friend, "Honestly Ivy, I can imagine you just sitting there looking all doom and gloom 'cause you had no work to do!"

"Yeah, my conscience is never clear." Leah said to Ivy with a nervous half laugh. I'm so nervous right now. They're being all friendly and everything but it might be easier if they weren't. I'd know what to do. It was kind of sick in its own way, but she'd spent so much time isolating herself that she was good at that, and the loneliness and misery were almost comforting in their own way. They were familiar and thus less scary then interacting with people. Before Leah could say more Ricki told her that she could do Sunday too but she had some guitar thing. "So now's good as ever. Thanks again....oh, and the formal thing, I just don't really know how to talk to people you know, not much practice at it."
"Anyway, so French. I'm a couple months behind. Vocab I can do on my own you know, but grammar kicks my butt. This whole verb conjugation thing. Passe compose OK, grammatically its simple and I can just memorize. But God help me with plus-que-parfait and futur anterior. I can't make heads or tails of them, both how to write 'em and when to use 'em," she said as she flipped through the book to the lessons on the future tenses.

"Oh please, I had work to do. I had plenty to do since the teachers made sure they kept me in tune with what the rest of you were learning, so I'm where the rest of you are," Ivy laughed, giving Ricki a 'yeah right' look. "Like they'd let me be in quarantine without something to do, please," she laughed again before continuing. "Yeah, I'm happy to be back around the rest of you. I missed you all, I mean, I was in a room with nothing but homework, books, and my formerly contaminated self," she answered, shaking her head a little. "Ha, if I didn't have work to do, I don't know what I'd have done to keep myself busy all that time," she said with slightly widened eyes at the thought. No books, no work or paper to do anything, nothing to do at all? That would've really sucked for her, but at least it didn't happen like that.
Ivy kept her face from wincing slightly when hearing how Katana didn't know how to talk to people. That was still kind of sad, but that was how it was unless she chose to change that. At least now she was for taking the help now. "Alright, so the plus-que-parfait, or pluperfect. It's used to point out an action that happened before another one, and the latter can actually be put in the sentence, or just implied. So, what you're basically doing is using the imparfait auxiliary verb, and then putting after it the past participle," she explained before turning to a blank page of her notebook.
Grabbing her pen and thinking for a moment, she scribbled out a couple sentences using the plus-que-parfait:
J'avais déjà lu le livre avant elle l'a acheté.
Tu étais lévé en retard pour la class parce que ton reveille n'a pas sonné.
"I had already read the book before she bought it. You got up late for class because your alarm clock didn't ring," she translated before explaining what she underlined. "Think of it as the passé compose, only instead of using the present forms of être and avoir and all those, use the imperfect and add the imperfect endings to the stems. You see? Use 'J'avais' instead of 'J'ai' and you have the plus-que-parfait. Do you get it?" she asked, looking from the page to Katana, waiting to see if she understood before she moved on to the future perfect.

"I think I kinda get it." Leah wasn't sure. She'd recognized 'j'avais deja lu le livre' somewhat. She knew 'deja' meant already and she knew 'lu' was from lire for read. Her memory was kind of fuzzy but 'livre' given the context was book. She also remembered avais, avais, avait, but didn't remember if the next part was avons, avez, avont, or maybe avions, aviez, or something. But it was close enough, right. 'j'avais lu,' I have read, she repeated to herself in her mind. So it seemed she got the verbs. Embarrassingly she didn't really recognize the rest of the sentence so well. She felt really dumb for not recognizing 'achete' immediately as she knew the word 'acheter.' She'd completely forgotten 'avant' and she didn't really know how to use the the 'le' and 'la.' The next sentence was harder. She had no idea what 'leve,' 'reveille', or 'sonne' meant.
"Yeah, I do get the verbs here. Don't know all the other words though", she said with a short nervous laugh, "Ok, maybe I should try one...say I try to write in French, 'I had lost my cat.' Hmm, that would be "J'avais oublie mon chat?" she said, making the sentence a question in her hesitation. As she said it she tried writing it down. "I don't think I remember the right second part for 'oublier'." God, she's gonna think I'm an idiot. But, no, this is how I learn. Gotta try it right.
"And let's see with etre how about I"...she paused trying to think about an etre verb, Hell, I need to re-memorize that list, what's that stupid new monicker thing again?, "alright how about 'They had entered the house.'...Let's see 'Ils etaient entre le maison.' Only Katana mispelled it spelling it as 'Ils etient entre le maison' when she wrote it hastily down in her notebook.
"So, how'd I do?" she asked both of her new potential friends expectantly.

Ricki craned her neck to have a look at Katana's book, before she screwed up her face in confusion. "One sec, lemme have a look." she lifted the book in her hands, and stared at the written words, before she turned around to look up at Nightshade. "Hey, Geek, isn't it supposed to be la maison? Or does that change too? The gender thing always confuses me... and oh, Leah, you mis-spelt etaient. You missed out the 'a'. Chill out, not all of us can write at lightening speed as this red-head-geek out here." Ricki stuck her tongue out at Ivy, and then passed the book along to her friend as well.
"When's this homework from? I swear we got different homework last time." Ricki added, stretching her arms out in front of her and interlocking her fingers, before bringing her hand to her mouth and stifling a yawn. "Uhhh. Sorry bout that, i'm just... eh, I'm not tired. I guess I just felt like yawning." Ricki rolled her eyes, before wiping the watery edges of her eyes using the side of her hand and wiping her hands on her jeans. "Or actually, I think I might be sleepy. But I don't want to sleep." she sighed, shaking her head.
"So, Dwayne, you done checking Leah's French yet?" Ricki turned around, and poked Ivy's knee, before smiling over at Leah. "You see, I think Ivy has vague brain freezes when she sees error in work. She blanks out, has a hissy mental fit, and then comes back to being normal. If that's what you call her. She's like a different breed of weird. But aw well. So yes- brain freeze Ivy? Or you living?" Ricki grinned at her friend, rolling her eyes and poking her knee.

La maison, not le. Urgh. That word was a whole different unit and Leah was sure she'd had it down. For goodness sake it was French 1. And you conjugated the verb wrong too, you dummy. But as disappointed as Leah was with herself she tried to keep outwardly calm, turning to Taffy and answering her comments and questions, saying "Yeah, gender trips me up too," without realizing the irony the statement had coming from her. "Oh, and its ancient too. I told ya I hadn't done homework in forever. And now I remember why. It's so boring, no wonder you're about to fall asleep." Yeah, having them check it not the best idea in the world. "Maybe we can spare you the nap and Ivy the hissy fits and just put my wrong French away?" Leah said. "I can do it later."
Leah knew well enough that she wasn't really going to accomplish anything anyway. Not sitting her with her book in front of the television and around people. Had she really wanted to study in earnest she would have headed to the library. She'd just wanted to be around people and hang out some, and took the book so as not to feel guilty. Of course the rational part of her brain that told her that was confronted by the irrational part that screamed But you're not getting anything done. Don't you dare put that book away. You'll fail again, you idiot.
