Penny deeply breathed in the scents of the flowers, and sat down on the bench next to the blossoming cherry tree. She admired the sun shining through its translucent pink petals. The garden was much larger in scale than her uncle's, but it reminded her of him. It was obviously kept with the same love and attention he gave his. Smoothing her purple sun dress out, she crossed her legs, and pulled her writing tablet, an apple, and an old cigar box full of marbles out of her bag. She placed the apple and the box of marbles on the bench next to her.
She then tore four sheets of paper from the writing pad and let them blow away in the mind. After watching them carefully for a moment, she closed her eyes. She pictured the papers. She felt the wind at her back and tried to predict where it would blow them. Then she clenched her fists tight and concentrated harder. Ok, lightly, she thought, Just make them fall. The bench shook under her as she pulled the power of the earth's gravitational field through her. She unclenched her fists trying to hold back the surge and focus it where the papers were in her mind's eye.
The bench shook harder and gave way, breaking under her. She went sprawling to the ground and the wooden box shattered, marbles flying out and plummeting immediately to the ground. The apple was crushed. Penny looked up and saw the papers still fluttering in the breeze in front of her. The gravitational field had intensified directly in a 10' to 15' diameter around her only. It was like when she stopped the subway car on the Pyongyang Metro, a giant undirected surge of gravity concentrated on her, not on a spot where she tried to direct it. She couldn't direct it then, or now. A start, she thought calmly, It came when I wanted.
She lay on the ground for a few minutes, clearing her mind of all thoughts and relaxing her muscles. As she relaxed the gravitational field diminished. Five minutes later the field had returned to normal. She stood up, brushed herself off, and went to go get the papers, which were now scattered across the garden. She was proud she could tell her teacher at her first flying class that she already knew how to call on her power at will. That she could only summon crushing gravity on her own position didn't bother her. I'm going to fly in no time, she thought, as she walked back with the papers.
She sat cross legged on the ground and let them go again. She closed her eyes. She felt the gravitational field grow around her. The wave of gravity hit her again and knocked her onto her face. She sat up after a the field dissipated and tried again. After four or five more tries she thought of something different. I'm trying to grab the paper. Maybe I'm not ready yet. I'll just try to make it not so strong. She took the papers, and pushed them back in her bag, instead of letting them go again, and sat down cross legged one more time.
She funneled the gravitational forces through her, working more slowly this time. She moderated her breathing and pulled gravity into her like air in her lungs. The force knocked her over again, but this time with a little less intensity. A few minutes later, when it let go of her, she sat up feeling very pleased with herself. She figured she could gradually learn to increase the gravity less and less, and then finally to decrease it. Then she would float. After that flying would be just a few adjustments away.
Picking up her note pad, she pulled a pen out of her bag and jotted down some quick notes. A little more practice before breakfast, she thought, and some more tonight. Her mind ran away with all the possibilities for her power. She imagined herself like Superwoman, her favorite super hero. Only I won't wear the spandex. Her family would never approve of spandex. She reached for the apple and then remembered it had been crushed. That reminded her of the bench. Oops.

It's gotta be somewhere here... someewhere... ohh new person... haven't met her properly yet- I know I saw her somewhere with k'8 though. Breakfast was it? I think so.. The girl seemed sort of oblivious to the world at the moment. Ricki slowed down her prancing to more of light slow skipping, before she notices that the girl had a notepad and pen in her hand- which reminded her that she was here looking for a book herself. Ricki knew not many people came here- it was a rather solemn place to be- but Ricki found it was a soothing place to come and do all her music-relate stuff.
There was something really... clean about this place. "Umm... Hello?" Ricki didn't want to startle the girl because she seemed really intent on what she was doing... but the blonde Acolyte needed some help. Ricki wouldn't have minded searching alone, but asking someone who looked like they'd been here for a while wouldn't hurt would it? "Hi.. sorry! I didn't mean to disturb you! I just wanted to ask... by any chance have you seen a pink notebook lying somewhere around here? It's just that it has some of my sheet music in it, some of my own stuff, some stuff by other artists... and I left it here a couple of days ago and I kept forgetting to come and find it and... and..."
Ricki shut her mouth, sighing and shaking her head rather animatedly, her blonde her dancing around her. "Right, sorry. I'm rambling- I tend to do that quite a lot! And oh my god... I'm sorry... I haven't introduced myself! I'm Ricki- Ricki Day. Codename Taffy, Team Acolytes." Ricki smiled her bright, pleasant smile at the girl. "... but yeah- any chance of you having spotted a pink notebook?"

"Hey Ricki. That's so cool." Penny said excitedly as she got up off the ground, "That you write music and all. I'm Penny." She capped her pen and slipped it and her notebook back into her bag. "NuMutants. I've only really met k'8 and TuneUp so far. I mean there was Riker in art class but he just sorta growled. I can't wait for practice. I was just trying to get ready. I can't really use my power yet." Penny was about to ask Ricki about her power when she remembered the girl's notebook. "Oh, yeah, your notebook. I haven't seen it. It's gotta be here though. I'll help you look."
"I was trying to use my power and kinda killed the bench," she said pointing to it. "I can use gravity. Sort of like that mutant on the news, Magneto, uses magnets, except I'm not evil. And I can't control it yet. Right now I can only crush me and everything around me with real intense gravity. But tomorrow's flying class. I'm gonna fly in no time. I know it. I just have to learn up and some sense of direction." Penny spoke faster and faster as she got more excited. "So what do you do? Oh, and what kind of music? If we find your book will you show me?"

"Oh my god! Wow! That's amazing!" Gravity? That really was something super-cool to control. Ricki grinned at the girl, already liking her- because despite the really I like to be alone impression that Ricki got of her at first sight, she turned out to be just about as lively and animated as Ricki. It was nice to have other people who weren't all that jaded around. "Penny huh? That's a really nice name! Nice to meet you penny! and oh my god, I'm sure you'll ace flying class. I've so wanted to attend it, but well, there's really no point because I can't exactly fly with the powers I have." Ricki rolled her eyes, giggling a little.
"Umm! Sure! I mean, I play piano mostly, but um- if you want I could play for you sometime. It's not that entertaining if you get me, but if you're really into music and stuff- catch hold of Gavin. I don't know if you've met him yet? He's amazing!" Ricki nodded, and at the thought of her team-mate, she remembered that she needed to bug him for a couple more guitar lessons. She hadn't got there just yet. "... but there's also this new girl Liv. She's a drummer apparently. I haven't heard her, but she seems like she knows what she's doing, so I think she's pretty cool too!"
Okay, so Ricki Day was rambling and talking more than nessecary, yet again. But that was just Ricki for you- someone who was constantly into babbling. "Although, thank you! It'd be great if you coul help me look! I know I was writing somewhere down there..." Ricki pointed ahead of her before beginning to skip in that direction. "but with the number of people and their crazy powers, you never know. I mean it could easily have been flown away... or decayed... or idk. Gotten stuck in a tree." Ricki rolled her eyes, "But I hope it's still somewhere... here..." Ricki started walking around slowly, trying to crane her neck and look around for any signs of her book.
"Soo. Where are you from Penny? D'you like this place so far?"

"Minnesota," Penny replied. "It's nice there." While Penny's English was quite good she had not picked up a Minnesota accent, or any other kind of American accent. Her syllables were a bit too crisp and surgical for a native speaker, betraying the effort that went into them. "I didn't always live there, but it's home now." She didn't want to talk about Korea. Then she would have to talk about her parents, and that was painful so there was no point in doing it. My brother likes to be in pain all the time, remembering that. He acts like if he's suffering it honors our parents memory, or maybe he just likes everybody to comfort him. I'd rather be normal. "I like it here too. I've already made friends with k'8. She gave me the name, Penny. I'll tell her you like it."
"So what's your power? I know you don't fly, but you have to do something cool." Penny wanted to know all about the girl's power, and specifically what the school was teaching her about controlling it. She knew all that would come in time, but Penny was impatient, which was why she was in the garden trying to force her power instead of in bed or doing all the schoolwork she had been given as a new transfer student. "Is it musical?" That'd be awesome. Mutant piano powers! "And, yeah, I'd like to hear you play." The girl seemed really nice and liked to talk just as much as Penny did, which was always a big plus. "Oh, and which one's Gavin? I can't keep all the names straight."

"Oh I wish it was musical- that would've been so amazing! But noo, it's not- although, i still love my power!" Ricki grinned, countinuing to skip around the garden in search for her book. "I have stretch-y powers. Elasticy. See... like this." Ricki was wearing a plain white spaghetti top with light blue straight-cut jeans and a jumper tied around her waist, hence stretching her hand wasn't much of an issue. Ricki stretched her hand out far enough to tap Penny's shoulder before grinning. "It's simple but y'know, it's fun." Ricki grinned, "It's like Mr Fantastic, from the Fantastic 4! I'd love to meet him someday... that'd be amazing."
Ricki was entering her own little world right now, but something rather bent and a bit wrecked caught her eye near by a hedge-bush thing. Ricki restored her arm back to normal size and pranced her way over to the hedge only to pull out a bent and slightly wind-swept pink book. "FOUND IT!" She declared, grinning as she skipped over to Penny. "Alrightt. What did you ask me earlier? Oh.. Gavin? He's the cute red-head with massive read wings." It was just very Ricki-like to compliment the people she was talking about- it never occured to her the way it might've sounded like to other people.
"Alright, now that I've found my book... well, I can try help you out with your power if you like? I feel guilty for interrupting you. You seemed really into it." Ricki said slowing her steps down to a walk as she moved now besides Penny. "How exactly do your powers work then? Can you just... feel the control over the gravity inside you or something?"

"Oh, my God. I'd kill to meet him!," Penny chimed in when the other girl had finished speaking. "You should totally write him and tell him about your power and all. You've already got a lot in common." Penny tried to think of who she would meet if she could meet one superhero. There were so many to chose from both real and imagined. Of course she had plenty to choose from here at the Institute itself. The choice had to be Rogue. She's so amazingly cool. I wonder if it would be tacky to ask for an autograph. "I'm good for now." Penny said to Ricki's offer to help with her powers practice. "I killed the bench and I don't want to trash the garden. Let's see your notebook."
"And I think I met Gavin. He seemed fun. Is he also a piano player?" Penny imagined the boy in a tux for a formal concert, his wings sticking out of the back like they were tied on costume pieces. She laughed softly at the thought. "You know dueling pianos in the rec room would be really fun." Penny added almost out of nowhere. "My sister plays the piano, but I bet she's not as good as you. Actually, she's not very good. But we still had fun. I don't play. I sing, but that's even worse than my sister's piano playing. It's still fun. But, yeah, let's see what you have."

"Ouch." Ricki said, her usual giggles underlining her tone as she sent a feverish look towards the broken bench in the memorial garden. "aaand... nope. Gavin's more into guitar, although I think he can play some keybaord or piano... I'm not sure though." Ricki shrugged, although her face lit up as Penny mentioned that she was into singing. The number of musical mutants was just increasing by the day- not that Ricki had reasons to complain, she thought it was amazing! "Oh wow, if you're really into singing, that'd be soooo cool! You could duet with Gavin sometime, he was such an amazing voice!" Ricki's natural wide-spread smile was almost stuck to face. "Oh.. um.. now?" Ricki looked down at the now slightly-battered pink notebook. "Wow... sure. It's mostly just sheet music for stuff I've written really... messy I knoww, I mostly do neat version on my laptop then print them out and put them in this folder I have... oh yeah and some random pages just have lyrics on them, I get inspired at such random times!" Ricki flushed pink a little as she passed her book over to Penny. Ricki didn't mind people reading her stuff, but she always got that tad bit nervous because she didn't know how people would react to her music. Seeing most of it was written on the piano- it all sounded very... melodic and classical- although it wasn't really supposed to. Ricki often listened to artists who people'd never ever heard of, and her music taste varied a great deal. When she wrote her own stuff, she often tried to combine loads of different things, which sometimes worked pretty well, and other times just failed epicly. "That one's the most recent..." Ricki said, her eyes on the book as Penny ficked through it, "I haven't finished it juuustt yeeet, I'm still working on the lyrics, I've only just gotten the Chorus down..." Ricki shrugged. Her eyes were scannning the lyrics that were scribbled across the page.

"Did I mention I sing really badly." Penny replied giggling. "But I'd love to sing that," she said pointing to Ricki's lyrics. "I just love the chorus. It could be rock or country. I think you should go with rock." Penny's best friend in high school in Minnesota had tortured her with K102, Minneapolis' country station. Having to endure Travis Tritt first thing in the morning on the way to school was something she would not wish on her worst enemy. Although he was hardly the worst of the country singers, just a favorite of the morning DJs. Her brother had introduced her to rock, which was much more to her liking. "You could add an awesome guitar part for Gavin!"
The idea got Penny running off on a tangent. "I tried to write some song lyrics once. We had this project in class to teach us about rhyme and meter and all that stuff, which is hard enough in Korean, but English makes no sense, so this girl Trin and I had to do a poem and we decided it would be easier as lyrics. Because lyrics are poetry too, yes? But we were both real new and didn't know a lot of words so it came out all strange. Penny paused and then added, "I bet I could do better now, but I haven't really thought of it. Not that I could do as well as you. Your stuff is amazing."
"Any ideas on the rest of the song?" Penny asked enthusiastically. "Have you shown it to Gavin?" are you and he going out. Penny did not ask the last part. Her uncle had scolded her before on being too inquisitive. You did not ask people you just met personal questions like that. It wasn't acceptable here anymore than it had been at home. Yet Penny still always wanted to ask. She wanted to know everything about everybody, and Ricki was no exception.

"You really like asking a lot of questions don't you?" Ricki couldn't help but giggle as she spoke, rolling her eyes at Perigee. "No... I haven't shown it to Gavin... I haven't shown it to anyone really, and I seriously doubt I'll be showing it to anyone." Ricki pulled her book out of Penny's hand, trying to make the gesture as polite as possible to not come across as rude- she didn't have anything against Penny or anything, it was just that she didn't like others reading her lyrics too much, it was just quite a personal thing to her.
Ricki wasn't too much of a private person- she didn't mind people listening to her play music or read just plain sheet music, but she didn't like too many people reading her lyrics... she didn't know why- she just didn't. Ricki bit her lip, before turning around to look at Penny. "I'm gonna head up to the Rec Room to pull my friend Ivy away from the TV and get her to actually socialize with living beings 'cause I'm just scared she's going to pop due to lack of interaction one of these days." Ricki rolled her eyes at Penny and licked her lips before starting towards the mansion. "You wanna come?"

"Best way to learn things," Penny said brightly. "Thanks for showing me. It was really cool." She had really liked the lyrics and hoped that Ricki would show her more sometime. She also appreciated that Ricki trusted her enough to show it to her given her apparent reluctance to show it to people. Penny smiled again. After just a few days she was already liking the school a lot. It wasn't that different from Minnesota after all, and here she had been a little worried that she would feel out of place.
"Sure, I'd love to come," she replied to Ricki. "I should stop and tell Ms. Frost about the bench first." She knew if she didn't tell the headmistress right away she would forget, and that would be bad. She had broken a vase at home once as a small child, and her parents had been more angry about her not telling them right away than about her breaking it. "Do you mind?"

Ricki shook her head, "Oh no! Not at all... althoughhh... hmm..." Ricki didn't know if she wanted to leave Ivy in front of that television set for any longer. Even though Ricki joked about it all the time, she was genuinely worried about what all the anti-social behaviour could do to Ivy. Ricki knew Ivy was weary of people because she was scared of hurting them, but Ricki liked to discount that and never really mention it or make any gestures to show Ivy that she knew, when she was around the red-head Acolyte.
Ricki wanted to try to get Ivy out of her fear, and her angle of going about things was to just... be as carefree around Ivy as she was around other people. If people behaved differently around her, Ricki was just scared that Ivy would start shutting herself even more. "... I really don't want to leave Ivy in front of that TV set for even a second longer. It's just..." Ricki mock-shuddered, and giggled, rolling her eyes. "... it's baaaad. Hmm... how about you quickly pop down to see Ms Frost and then pop down to the library?" Ricki bit her lip, hoping Penny wouldn't mind. "C'mon... we're both headed to the mansion either ways."
